To connect to the mysql database you have to add an Access Host for mysql in your cPanel.
To do this go to your cPanel, select "MySQL Databases" and near the bottom of that screen add an Access Host. Easiest is to use a wildcard (%) in combination with the domain of your ISP like: %.yourprovider.com

And I'm sure this is obvious, but it caught me for a while

The database userid will have your web hosting username prepended to it. So if the domain is fred.com and you chose fredcom as the userid (for example), and you add a database userid of "wilma", then the actual database userid is fredcom_wilma.

I was working with a MS Access front end and had entered the short (wilma) name in the ODBC setup. Took a while to track down because I had convinced myself it was an access host issue.

Anyone ever get the following error?

Lost connection to mysql server during query (#2013)

Lately, I get this and I have no idea what I've done to create this error.

Your script might be bad, try checking the mysql_querys.

I'm using ODBC with MS Access to connect.

I'm not sure what you mean by mysql_querys.

I haven't written any script. I tried Navicat, but got the same error.

Just a couple of wild guesses..It may be hostgator dropping the connection if you're trying to do something you don't have permission to, like create or drop a database...or you are idle for a while and the connection is timing out? Try to see if you can cause the error to occur with a specific action or after a certain time. I have connected in with Navicat and OpenOffice.org and neither have reported any errors.

Actually you may be on to something. It does seem to drop after a certain period of time, but it seems pretty fast to me. If I'm idle for more than 20 seconds or so it drops. If I'm not idle then it seems to stay active.
