All HG servers are linux. My server here uses RedHat Enterprise 4-- yours may be similar. Since there are many servers with hatchling plans I'd recommend sending a ticket to support@hostgator.com with your main domain and they can answer.

HG upgraded all the shared and reseller servers to CentOS about 3months ago.

ETA: Though they may still be in the process of converting it. Some servers are definitely not CentOS (yet?) though.

Can anyone give reasons for the upgrade and why they are now using CentOS?

CentOS is a brand free version of RHEL. Since RHEL is GPL they have to release the source. A couple of volunteers across the world remove some of the RedHat mentions from the source and compile it. There are others that do the same as CentOs... like White Box linux. but not as effectively. Vtrain
