Lightbulb Notification of Server Events

Hello Everyone,

First of all, let me say, I know this has been said before. I would really like to see this implemented though. Here is my proposal to HostGator:

1) Create an "Offical Sever Notification" topic where only staff are permitted to post and only registered and verified members can view it.

2) Add a thread for each server in that topic.

3) Post on the thread for the specified server if a "situation" occurs, such as a failed hard drive, or chassis swap. Basically, anything serious that would cause downtime.

4) This would give people on the specified server to subscribe to that thread, so whenever something on that server occurs, they get emailed.

I am aware there is currently a "Network Status" topic, but I think it gets to polluted by little issues, such as mail blacklisting, or an above normal server load, that often turns out to be only affecting one user's account.

I am creating one of my world famous polls to see what other people think. Thank you for your vote, even if you disagree with me.

It would be better having a status server (not hosted at theplanet) like status.hostgator.com then a page for each server ie, status.hostgator.com/gator100/ that has a feature to subscribe via RSS

One of the gators was gonna look into. i will look for the thread

I like the idea, though perhaps the implementation Sam suggests may be more practical.

On the other hand, subscribing to that server's thread has its pluses.

The ideal way to implement it would be a page for each server, with link supplied in welcome e-mail.

Could a HostGator staff member please post a comment about this?

I think it should be readable by all, so as to show openly how much up time and down time the servers are getting.

I think that (3) should include anything that could affect the server.

I really like (4)

Yes, I agree that it is rather polluted with other posts. It would be nice to allow people to *respond* to such post *if* it could be done in a way that it would not pollute the threads. But that's a big "if".

over time, having a thread per server would get unweildly as the thread would grow. having a forum per server doesn't sound managable either as there are too many servers. so there may be some logitical issues to work out.

The ones that manage the thread, could delete posts that are over a year or two old. Or a script could hadle that. Another option would be to start new threads at the beginging of each year. That might be the better option, and a post in the previous year thread could be made noting that a new year thread has been started.
