Default Noobie again: Hostgator? Joomla? FTP?

I've studied the ftp resources Gwyneth gave me in a previous thread, but I still have questions. Once again, I don't know whether I'm asking a Hostgator or a Joomla question, or even something other than that.

I've got several pages of my website done, but not published. My "mentor" has told me to create a blank index.html page and send it by ftp to my host. She says everyone else will get a blank page if they go to the site, but I can give her links and she can go to my pages and look around. I don't understand this, but I'm trying to do what she said.

In Word, I saved a blank page in html and called it "index.htm" I have Core FTP Lite, and I THINK it's set up correctly. It seems to indicate that I'm connected to the server. I can find the "index.htm" on my hard drive, but when I try to transfer it to the server it fails.

Is there a way to tell whether my problem is with the connection to the server? Or maybe I don't have the right directory file? I don't know what that means, either, but I've seen reference to that in a couple of ftp tutorials. Can you tell by my description that I've got some other problem going on (besides terminal ignorance!)?

Thanks in advance! Anne

Hello Anne,

first you have to be sure that your FTP client is in "passive transfer" mode. Second if in the second window you can see the server directories and files this is an indication that you are connected.

If you are connected and in "passive transfer" mode then you select your index.htm file on your hardrive in your window and select in the server window the "public_html" directory and then you transfer your file there.

If there is a problem sending the file then you will have a log file describing the errors encountred, then you could copy these informations to us to help you troubleshoot the issue.

Good luck!

Thanks, Regentronique. My friend talked me through it over the phone, and I had put the IP number where the domain name was supposed to be. I thought they were one and the same, but apparently that enabled me to connect to my site. I saw the whole directory and was able to upload the index file. It was neat! Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Anne
