Default non-standard PINE client config-imap/smtp from outside HG network

I have access to so many different servers that I still use a PINE client for security (plain text can't hurt my systems). If you use PINE, I hope this helps you and the HG support folks who tried very hard to be helpful.

My new HG account was set up with IMAP email by default. I did not realize that nor did HG support point that out :( despite several request emails showing I was trying to use ...service=pop... my fault for not emphasizing that, I guess -- a non-technical but critical communications error.

Once I sent myself an email successfully, I saw the format and directory structure and went to IMAP...

Then spent more time on SMTP side until I realized all three national network providers I have access to were permitting port 25 INSIDE but blocking it from outside their respective networks ...duh. Likely the same reason HG support could prove port 25 is open on their servers.

About 4 solid hours later, here is what works.

Substitute your domain name for yyyy.zzz and
Substitute the primary account login for xxxxxxxx.
You will be prompted for a password.

From my .pinerc:
...
inbox-path={mail.yyyy.zzz/service=imap/norsh/novalidate-cert/user=xxxxxxxx+yyyy.zzz}INBOX
...
smtp-server=mail.yyyy.zzz:26/novalidate-cert/user=xxxxxxxx+yyyy.zzz
...

Note: this will prompt you for password to both receive and send email, and the passwords MAY be different depending on how your accounts are set up.

good luck and let me know if this helps!

Because of that HG servers have also port 26 open for SMTP connections.

And all HG email accounts can be accesses using either IMAP or POP3.

I sure wish you had been around about midnight last night! I could not get pop working to anything but an empty directory and all emails were coming in in the IMAP directory format.
