I have been a Hostgator customer for years, have referred several people, and have never had a bad thing to say about the service, until today...
I can understand discontinuing the free non-profit hosting, but I feel that HG has handled the situation badly. 1) I was just given notice today (the 9th) that payment of almost $180 is due on the 15th. No prior notice was given at all that this payment was coming due. This is only 5 days notice, 2 of which are weekend days. This is not enough time to get proper approval for this expenditure. So either our site/e-mail goes down or this money have to come out of my pocket. 2) They are asking payment for the largest shared hosting plan available (Business). In order to downgrade to a more appropriate plan for us, HG is requiring an additional $10 downgrade fee. HG is sticking me in this situation and requiring more money to fix the problem. 3) Couldn't have HG at least offered reduced cost hosting for non-profits? At the absolute least, the downgrade fee should be waived. Bottom line, this entire thing has tarnished HostGator's otherwise great reputation in my mind. Trying to contact support has resulting in zero service or willingness to work with me, whatsoever. This is not the Host Gator I signed up with and have been recommending to people for almost 5 years now. |

Sounds like you received almost a thousand dollars of free hosting if you got it for 5 years.
There are 1.5 million non-profits in the United States alone, so while I can put myself in your shoes momentarily, I have to applaud HostGator for the charity they have given and helped others. ![]() You can also change your billing cycle to monthly if that helps. |

Was this the first notice you got that the free NPO hosting was ending? If so, then I can understand your frustrations, and that is bad practice, if not, when DID they tell you they had discontinued it? What did you do when they told you?

If I'd known that was ever available, I'd have jumped on it! Shoot, I haven't turned a profit in years.
