Angry NO MORE semi-dedicated servers with HG

Well, that's not good news at all for long-term HostGator customers. It appears HG doesn't offer semi-dedicated servers anymore... That's too bad.. people will be forced to move to other companies in long term that offer either semi or VPS..

-------------------------

http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hcp...o/chatinfo.gifPlease wait for a HostGator operator to respond.
http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hcp...o/chatinfo.gifWelcome to HostGator Live Chat! You are now chatting with '***'
***: Welcome to HostGator, how may I assist you?
Tom: Can you give me a link that describes your semi-dedicated servers?
***: I'm sorry to inform you but we no longer offer semi-dedicated solutions.
Tom: Hmm - not in the future either?
***: It doesn't appear so.
Tom: How about VPS?
***: We do not offer a VPS but we do offer an unmanage dedicated server if you are interested in that.
Tom: OK, thanks.

Right, but tell it to 95% of webmasters who don't have enough knowledge to run their own dedicated server..

Why ask if Hg would do VPS servers then? you have to manage that yourself

Well, because since in the past they offered managed semi-dedicated servers I thought that would make sense to ask..

Yes, and it makes a lot of sense for people interested in the semi-dedicated (who because there was no reseller access on it had to be someone without hosting customers).

It's not that hard to manage, especially without the reseller complication, and I'd think anybody running a site using the resources that occasioned interest in a semi-dedicated would a) pick up the skills fairly quickly and b) would benefit from learning them.

The dedicated forum here is a fantastic fill-in for the "managed" part of running a dedicated. A bunch of us in the last several weeks have been learning together how to set up our $75 unmanaged dedicated servers.

Are you serious?
You really think that people who would be able to run websites in a semi-dedicated account would be able to do it in an unmanaged server?

I'm busy enough with marketing my sites, writing content, dealing with clients. I don't have time and urge to learn the technical stuff.. You may suggest I could go look and hire someone to manage a dedicated server for me.. but why do it if other companies offer managed semi-dedicated or managed VPS..

I really think that offering a dedicated server, unmanaged OR managed, to just about everyone is irresponsible.

Hmm - so that would be an equivalent of the Basic server [that one that nobody recommends ;] from this page? - http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml. Or better?

Those were the specs when Sam got his. Yukon Master's and mine were more recent and slightly different so there does not appear to be a list of standardized specs.

To get one, you have to go through the order link and choose dedicated--it's the first choice on the drop down.

Order Web Hosting from HostGator

The most difficult part was/is getting it set up and there is an excellent service from configserver.com that does it all, quickly and efficiently, for $140.

However, some of us have done without that.

IMO--and I do not want to start a controversy--someone running a complicated enough site (with or without a number of non-resold domains) to require a semi-dedicated server would already have the skills and attitude to go with an unmanaged dedi. If they don't, it's only a matter of time before their site(s)/domain(s) get into trouble, dedi server or not.

As for most resellers (who weren't able to use an HG semi-dedi anyway), if I were a customer of theirs, I'd certainly hope they'd be able to cope with a non-managed dedi.

Why? I'm still new enough to dedi-ownership that I could be missing something obvious in this reasoning, but if someone gets in trouble at least it won't spread to others who share his/her server. It's not like a drivers' license.

Also, for $75 a month it is about the finest teaching tool available (even if someone doesn't put live sites on it for a while.)

You take my words the wrong way.
I am not saying that you, or anyone running a dedicated server was irresponsible, but I am saying that it is irresponsible to offer it to almost everyone.

It's those things I see in these forums all the time...
when someone mentions "Fantastico" there are always a few at least telling "Don't use it!".
And if someone tells that he's afraif that his site is using too much resources, there are always a few telling "Get a dedicated!".
It just is not that simple.

Thanks for explaining. I didn't think you meant the users (such as me and Yukon Master) were irresponsible, but I was equating irresponsible sellers with, say, liquor stores passing out beer to eight-year-olds.

I definitely agree it could be irresponsible to suggest a dedi, particularly as a blanket prescription for all troubles (just as most knee-jerk reactions are at best useless and at worst capable of making real problems).
But as far as offering them...well, maybe it depends on what, if anything is promised for them. There is certainly no shortage of wild claims made by some sellers of virtually anything Internet-related. But far from making any promises or pitches for the DediKiddies, HG doesn't even publish specs for them.

To some extent, "wishful buying" is also a factor.

The forum has seen plenty of posts by people expecting much more, in terms of service or performance, than the reality they got. Then there are those who expect to cram their size nine foot, as the saying goes, into a size six shoe--sometimes against all seller advice to the contrary.

Actually the SemiDedicated account is the same price. $75. I know because I currently have it. Surely hope my current plan isn't phased out from under me. I don't have the cashflow for a Dedicated yet nor the technical know how or inclination or time to learn for an unmanaged server.
