Default Newbie's

How about a section for newbies?
Where to find info?

Had trouble finding info to create an add-on domain
Still unclear about ftp for add-on domain - do I ftp to newdomain.com, add-ondomain.com, add-ondomain.domain.com???
Does an add-on domain need an "index" page or will that mess things up?

When creating a new addon domain, you will have to create a user and password for that addon. You can use it to access that specific folder created for this addon domain only. By using that username/password, you will only see files for that addon domain and not files for the main website.

The addon domain is like a complete website by itself. It will need it's index page so it work. It will not affect you main domain. It will share the same control panel( cPanel )

I hope it does give you a good start also.

Best Regards,

Actually, this is optional. After you create an add-on in cPanel, you don't need to do anything different to upload files there than you would for any other directory you have. If you don't create an add-on ftp account, you can use your main ftp account to access the add-on directory. You will see it with all your other directories when your main ftp account logs in.

You can do what chaloupe suggests, if you want. But if you're the only person who's going to be uploading or downloading stuff to or from the add-on, it's probably more work than it's worth.

If you're not the only person, and you want to restrict upload/download access, then creating a separate ftp account makes sense.

BTW, you don't even need to use ftp--you can upload files to any of your directories with cPanel's file manager, though the process may be a little cumbersome.

1) Login to cPanel. Select "Addon Domains." Fill in the information.
2) I believe you can connect either way. Give it a try.
3) An addon domain is like a seperate website. When you create one in cPanel, it creates a new folder, titled the name of the addon domain name in the public_html directory. You can put an index file in that folder, so when people go to the addon domain, that is what will show up. That folder is like the public_html folder for your main domain. Everything for the addon domain should go in it's own folder- just like a separate website.

Now, do you want the domain to go to the same website as the main domain on your account? If so, you want a parked domain.

Evan, very nice explanation. One point that should be stressed is, don't create the directory for the add-on yourself. Let cPanel do it, because otherwise things get screwed up.

Also, you need to enter the HG nameservers (the ones in your welcome email) at wherever you registered the add-on domain BEFORE you create it in cPanel.

You will know things are OK when cPanel tells you "Bind reloading on...."
