Default Newbie to VPS has a few Questions

I've been very happy with my Hostgator Services for the last year. I'm sitting pretty happy on a Shared host, but I am at the point where I need a bit more. I need more CRON, I need more SSH, I need to move my Icecast server hosting 12 feeds out of my basement and onto something a bit more stable

I know based on other threads that Icecast will run on the VPS. I plan on moving to VPS 3 + CPANEL. Being that $49.99 a month isn't the same as my $7.99 a month shared plan, I need to have a few questions answered before I am ready to make the move.

I do run my own Linux PC at home. I started with it a few months ago and I have already created my own BASH scripts. Running KDE does help (or should I say a GUI for you gnome fans). These scripts will be moved to the VPS - taking with it the "what-if" situation if I lose that PC, power, or ISP during the day.

If / When I purchase my VPS-3 plan via HG, what am I expected to do to get things up and running, and keep them up and running?

Does HG upgrade PHP, or is it up to me? Does HG keep the firewall tight, or is that up to me? Does HG install and configure PHP and MYSQL and everything else required to start hosting and sending mail, or again, does that fall on me?

I've never configured or setup my own Webhost - so if this is going to take me a month to learn how to do it, I think I'd rather spend that month configuring my own CentOS computer at home and learning how to do it for free - and then when I have things figured out, then purchase the VPS.

I like the shared hosting now.. All I really need to do is keep my site updated, backup my files and do sql backups. HG takes care of the security. Am I going to need to by my own rent-a-cop once I upgrade?

Thanks!

what you get is kick-ass good support on your managed server. DO, i repeat, DO get a plan with Cpanel/WHM included, because they are fully managed plans.

So far I have had a lot of help, with spamassasin default rules, DNS questions, firewall smtp rules (open up port 26, because 25 is blocked by some of my customers ISP) etc. etc. etc. (I repeat myself, but etc. etc. !)

I *did* use almost 8 hours convincing support that they had a real problem with spamassasin have defective default rules on a new VPS - but beside from that: Smooth !- It's HIGHLY recommended. And everything runs so smooth on a VPS, compared to shared(reseller) hosting. And so many new options to play around with :-)

I spent 25 usd every month for reseller hosting, now I'm spending twice that - and loving every minute of it !

btw: used to run cron scripts to backup all my customer cpanel's to my backup FTP server - now I just instruct WHM to backup the entire account - and all is backed up in one go. Automagically. to my backup FTP server. Every night, every week, every moth if I want it to :-)

oh, and......you have 1(one) backup of the entire VPS container also. Now not only can I restore the entire container to whatever point I last made a manual backup of that container, I have daily/weekly/monthly scheduled backup of all cpanels individually. Great !

I'm not looking back. Best 50 usd/month spend on my business ever.

You will enjoy it. I too moved from shared to vps and still loving it after making the switch as soon as HG made it available.
