What exactly are Shared Hosting & Dedicated Servers and what are their differences? Why are dedicated server packages higher in price than the shared hosting packages?

EDIT:
I found out from another source this info:
Shared Hosting is multiple sites on a given server. The cost is divided, making it smaller.
Dedicated Servers are for a single site.

Shared servers have multiple people on them. Dedicated have only one. This person can choose to run more then one site, resell, etc.

Basicly a dedicated server gives you more flexibilty.
