Newbie question

When you refer to anonymous ftp...what does that mean? I see that the Baby plan doesn't allow you anon ftp, but other plans do. What is it used for? If I have a personal site with pictures and a few media files and a small community forum, with the lack of anon ftp be a problem for me?

I'm sorry it's such a stupid newbie question...but I have to ask...hehe. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

It's not very important for the functions you mentioned. Anonymous FTP is exactly what the name says, the ability to use FTP access without having to have an account on that machine. This is mostly used to distribute files or in alternative to allow people to transfer files to your server.

Hi,

with anonymous ftp you can put files available for download on your server, and people can download them through ftp without the need of an account on that server (normally one will use 'anonymous' as login and the e-mail address as the password).
With 'normal ftp' you can also let people download files but they will need an account (that you create on the server for them) to ftp.
So, if you don't need people to download files from your server via anon ftp, that would not be a problem.

You would have to upgrade to the next higher plan normally, but you can always email sales@hostgator.com to ask if this would be possible for an additional fee if you'd like that.

So do I need anon ftp if I want people to be able to upload images to my site? I haven't built it yet but I was going to have a site with a php script for visitors to add an image. Can I do this without anon ftp?

In such a scenario anon wouldn't be needed at all, because an upload via PHP script would be an HTTP file transfer, not FTP
