Newbie Needs Help

Hello, I am a newbie at this website adventure. I started trying to build a site through site builder and got so frusturated I have been following the Kompzer tutorials to build one and have been going through it step by step. I am finally starting to learn the basics. I can pull up my site in IE and see everything I have done, but when I try to view it in firefox it is not there. The default host gator page pops up like I haven't published the site.

Can anyone give me some advice or know why this might be?

It sounds as if you may not have actually published it, and IE is looking at the local version. First, make sure you're not looking at it with IE via Kompozer, then press F5 to refresh. If you see the HG page, you haven't published it.

I am still in the works of making it so its not done yet. I could not get the publishing feature to work in kompozer so I have been uploading pages through filezilla. Does that publish it?

I talked to hostgator and they had me clear my cache and it now works.

"Publish" is a term used by site building programs that really means "upload to a public directory", which is what you've done with Filezilla. (So yes, you published it, but the clarification might be useful.)

The site building programs probably use 'publish' to distinguish from saving to a local disk. But they're just using a built-in FTP feature to do it.

Using Filezilla will probably be more useful most of the time.

But for future reference, to publish to your site in Kompozer: in the Edit menu, choose Publishing Site Settings.

The three important boxes and what to put in them:

Publishing Server: ignore the grossly unhelpful suggestion about what to enter for Publishing Server. Instead, enter ftp.yourdomain.com.

User Name: enter your cPanel login name.

Password: enter your cPanel password.

Also, for future reference: when you press F5, it refreshes your page, if you've uploaded a new one. Ctrl F5 both refreshes the page and clears the cache.
