well, the people you are asking have all selected hostgator at least at some point, so there is a good probability that we have positive feelings about the company.
you can get cheaper hosting, although frankly, HG is already a budget host. I used to host shop on price. it's a mistake. what i found was that the very cheapest hosts tended to have the worst customer service, which is THE gold standard when you're talking about hosting. they also tended to overload their servers to maximize revenue, so i had more frequent downtimes and, after a certain point, customer service would stop responding to my requests for help when their was trouble. in the dozen or so hosts i've been through with my troupe of clients, HG is the only one i am comfortable recommending. while they (or no host) is perfect, they are honest with their customers, they apologize when they make a mistake, and they go out of their way to try and treat their customers right. they also are "green" and make substantial donations to charity. in other words, in my experience HG tries to do the right thing, both by their customers and their community. that's worth paying more to me. maybe not to you, i dunno. good luck.

If this is for anything remotely business-related, including a hobby-turned-profitable, trying to save a buck or two a month could be far more expensive than you imagine.
The difference between the "cheapest possible" and a hosting firm selected for the right reasons is probably less than the net from one of your grungier football cards.
