Default Newbie Email question

I had my domain registration, hosting and email at GoDaddy and this weekend I moved my hosting to Host Gator. I'd like to keep my domain reg at GD but wouldn't mind moving my email to HG. I'm a little confused on what to do with email and if email is tied to hosting or domain registration.

At GD my email was admin@domain.com and at HG my default email is 123admin@domain.com. Am I supposed to create another email at HG with the same address as at GD and then all email will go there? In that case, what about previous emails I've recieved at GD? Are those lost?

My domain seems to have propagated to HG (its been 3 days) but I was just able to still log into my old email at GD (although I didn't try to send or recieve an email there). This makes me wonder if email has nothing to do with hosting. But again, if I create an email at HG with the same as at GD, which will be the one that works?

As you can see, I'm kind of confused by all this so any help would be welcome! Thanks!

You just have to login to your cpanel at domain.com/cpanel and click on the 'Mail' icon.

You'd then click on 'Add/Manage/Remove Accounts' in which you'd create your old email address. Emails should start arriving immediately if propagation is completed.

You will always be able to login to your old website thingy until they delete your account on their server.

Hope this helps

While the DNS is propagating, mail will be hitting both servers. So for a few days after you switch the DNS, do what OthelloBloke said and log into your old account via their control panel or IP to see if any mail is still hitting the old server.

Ok, thanks! I assume that even though I moved my hosting to HG I can still log into my old email at GD even though I can't use it to send or recieve mail anymore. But as long as I can still get access to my old messages that helps. I guess next time I should forward any old emails I needed first before setting up the domain switch.

Oops... I forgot to mention one more thing. If anyone from HG support reads this I have a suggestion: you may want to include a sentence or two on the "Getting Started" page that suggests people forward or print out any old emails before doing a DNS change from their old hosting provider.
