Default New to the dedicated server world!

After jumping from co-location to shared server (reseller hosting), I have decided to finally use dedicated server.

I am from a hosting company that served us for a long time, but on Jan.06 they moved to a new datacenter location and it is "killing" us, we are down at least once a week, and after reading all about HG, here I am.

As I said, I am new to the dedicated server and to HG, and I read here you guys talking about saying: "I had to do this and that" on the dedicated server...and I though that managed was for that reason.

With that in mind, could anybody easy my life by listing here what I should encounter at the beginning? the do's and dont's? and what should I do first...my server should be ready in the next 24-48 hours and I am freaking out already, and just between us: I DON'T HAVE A CLUE!!

Additionally, my server will have 2 SATA 80GB HD, very costilly annually. should I sign up for the back up as extra? Wasn't supposed to be included? Any hints on that....do I really to pay extra. I assume back up is a must and that I can't do it myself, am I right?

Any help is gladly appreciated. And if matters I am going with the Elite plan.

Tks

Welcome to the same world as me when I got my dedi server a few months ago.

To help you, Serra has done an excellent post:

It is call: So you just got a new dedicated server! so it is a great way to start. If you are not sure about something, ask support or use the dedicated support area in the forums.

Good Luck!

A dedicated should not have to be rebooted very often: Only when kernels are modified.

Here's my uptime on my server. I am not rebooting it at all except for kernel but that have not been an issue yet for me.

root@jbw [~]# uptime
17:07:29 up 116 days, 4:04, 1 user, load average: 0.05, 0.25, 0.26

tks for the info.

I already have my new server set, the "monster" is ready, and I am very exicted to learn new things at the same time I am very scared....specially because I am still not able to see the link for "So you just...", hopefully I will be able to see it by tomorrow.

For now, I have a quick question: The name servers are ready at the server, but since I am migrating from another hosting company, to avoid any downtime I was planning to setup all the accounts here first and when done and ready, I would go to my Registrar and register the name servers, is this possible? Can register the name servers be the last option? Could I still have access to all server function? Am I able to create new cpanels?

Again any input would be gladly appreciated!!

The thing I did for my name servers is to keep the same ones from my reseller account and on my dedicated server. I then(when all account was ready on the dedicated server), went in my registrar admin account for my main domain and I just change the IP's of my 2 name servers to point from the old server IP to the new servers IP. So for accounts that I didn't have any way to change the name servers, it was a great option for me.

Here's what I had in my reseller account for my name server and IP:
ns3.jbwseries.com IP 67.18.218.194
ns4.jbwseries.com IP 67.18.218.195

Here's what I have for my dedicated server:
ns3.jbwseries.com IP 69.93.81.66
ns4.jbwseries.com IP 69.93.81.67

Hope you understand how I did it. You can procedd another way if you wish like creating new name servers but don't forget that they can take up to 48 hours to propagate around the world.

Good Luck

Thanks but my situation is different since besides of changing hosting companies, I am also changing from .COM to .NET. I will not change my registrar until the server is ready with all my domains on it, but here is my problem:
If I go to my server at the WHM screen at the Basic cPanel/WHM Setup option, my primary and secondary nameserver is showing the correct new nameserver but with the old IPs, I already did almost anything to change them but no lucky there. Is there any other way to correct the nameservers IPs to reflect the new w/o changing on my registrar?

Additionally, my server is already ready, up and running, and just waiting to be configured...I am/was trying to use the holiday to speed up the configuration process but I still have no access to the forums, and I have no clue in what to do now....and I am hoping by tomorrow I will have access, since I signed up on 07/01.

I also read somewhere here to go to the "Dedicated Forum", where? how?

you need to wait for your forum account to be activated to have access to the other forums like the dedicated server one..

root@magnum [~]# uptime
19:28:31 up 67 days, 34 min, 1 user, load average: 0.09, 0.26, 0.24

Which is longer than I've had possession of it, so I'd say that's good...
