New to dedicated server

Hello, I just purchased the "Basic" dedicated server for my work account and a shared account for personal use. I have only ever used shared hosting and am a web designer, not a network person, so I am in over my head a bit.

I logged into my server by going to http://(myiphere) and used the root username and password they sent me. I got a page that said apache and cpanel are installed, but no cpanel. I emailed support, they got back to me right away (thanks guys!!) but I am still confused, he told me to "login as root" which I am assuming is some kind of network/Linux thing that I don't understand.

I use a Windows laptop and have NO experience with DOS or Linux or anything like that. Can anyone point me to a good thread with starter instructions assuming you know NOTHING about this stuff? I am good at following directions but I just don't know where to start here.

Thank you Sam!! I think I was putting "cpanel" after my IP the first time. Now I am all set, I'm in WHM which I have used before.

As soon as you get full forum access, you can see the other categories. One of them is devoted to dedicated servers and there is more helpful information than you can imagine.
