Positive New Customer - Happy.

I was sniffing around moving to HostGator a LONG time ago (2004, if you look back at my original forum posts) - But I reached the tipping point, and finally made the move.

1&1 lost my business because they insisted on billing me quarterly, which is quite a strain when you are on one of their more expensive packages. Also, I've been a customer with them for a long time, and they have since changed the pricing and features on my package. They refuse to give me the lower price my package now has, and also refuse to give me the current features of my package. In essence I was paying £20 for their "home" package which should cost £5... Not acceptable, and not a way to treat a customer that has been with them for over 5 years.

So, I moved to HostGator and I am very happy. I had close to 4GB of data to transfer - so I required SSH access to let me untar the files once they are uploaded. The support guys were very helpful with that. I had a few issues moving my scripts across, hardcoded paths that I'd forgotten about... etc, but nothing major. I had planned for a day of configuration while the DNS entries were cached, and I had everything up and running long before then. Everything seems to work just fine!

The fact you take PayPal as a payment option is very helpful for me, as it allows the donations I take from my site to directly fund the hosting costs. The pricing you guys offer is also amazing, I'd be happy on the hatchling plan, but I have a few domains so a baby croc is the one for me. Working out at roughly £4 for what I get is fantastic value!

I run a very large YaBB forum, last check I think it was the 3rd largest YaBB forum around - and HostGator copes perfectly well. I've only been a customer for a few weeks, but so far I haven't had any problems. Let's see how it continues. In 5 years with 1&1 I had about 2 hours of downtime, and no other major problems. Hopefully HostGator can match that!

So far the only downside to HostGator is a lack of SQLite support, as I've got a few projects using SQLite which I can't move across. ImageMagick support is a huge bonus though, so I guess it evens itself out.

All in all, I am very pleased with the level of support, the performance, and the price of HostGator. Two thumbs up
