Hello there.
The lovely Gators have put me onto the latest CPanel - all good - one of the reasons I wanted to look at that was because someone told me of the new (?) "web disk" facility. I have gone ahead and created a user and password. It does not work for me right now because I have to open some ports on my router (I'll try it later tonight). My questions though are (a) is the Web Disk similar to Apple's iDisk [as part of the .Mac package]?, and (b) using the Web Disk to put files on will mean I will use it as a semi-file storage thing - what happens if I use it LOTS? Eg - if I have 600GB free and I use it all (via WebDisk) does this contravene the TOS? (If so - and I go over my allotment what would HG charge me? Thanks for any comments... Regards Brynley |

WebDisk is the equivalent of iDisk, yes... It is, essentially, Webdav.
WebDisk is NOT provided as a means to back up your PC. It is provided as a means of access to your hosting files. We do not allow "files hosting" "file dumping" or utilizing your HostGator account as a means of backup/file storage. (Sorry to be so vehement here.) Your 600GB is for your hosting files, only. It is not currently possible to go over your 600GB allotment, due to our quota system. |

2. Do you mean that this feature is a different way of accessing what is on the server? 3. Is mail a part of "my hosting files"? 4. Is WebDisk "essentially Webdav" or is it "Webdav"? 5. If my website purpose is to get access to certain files, and I create an index page for those files, is that ok? |

OK thanks for that info - I was going to use it to transfer some text and small image files over (like a semi-backup thing) - but I can use a CMS just as well. Thanks for clarifying.

Web Disk is disabled on all of our shared and reseller servers as it presents a great security risk. We allow dedicated server owners to enable it if they wish, but advise against it and do not support it.
It is recommended to use ftp to upload and download files. Additionally, as previously stated, accounts on shared/reseller servers are not allowed to be used to store personal files, only relevant web data.

Hi, I'm trying to use webdisk, but all I get is
The connection was refused when attempting to contact myaccount.com:2078 (or indeed, any account of mine with webdisk, on 2078) I've made sure my firewall ports are open as required. Is everything working with it? You say it is available in one post, and disabled in another. Support asked me where I saw webdisk, I explained exactly where it was, and haven't been able to elicit any more response from them on the subject. It would be REALLY good to get this working. Has anyone sussed this out? |

Good afternoon, Are you on a shared or reseller server? If so it is already explained in this thread that WebDisk is disabled. If not and you have a dedicated server, just email us at support at hostgator.com and we'll assist you in setting this up on your server. Thanks, Josh Loe |

Part of my problem is that I sold an account via my affiliate link to someone because I told him it had webdisk, as I saw it in cpanel. Not realising that because it was listed and configurable, I should magically not know that it wasn't actually there and I was imagining it. He's a bit peeved at me to say the least! |
