Hi,
I've hosted with HostGator for just over 3 years now and it's without a doubt the best hosting provider I've used (and I've used quite a few). I'm currently on the verge of getting a reseller account for my web design company and I just need a bit of persuading because of a some offers I've found elsewhere. For £29.99 ($44.18) p/mo I've found a pretty reputable provider that does unlimited domains, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space. I'm a bit wary of this since it seems too good to be true. Another I've found for £24.99 ($36.81) p/mo has 250GB of space and 2TB of bandwidth. It's just a bit strange to me as these rates seem way better than most, which makes me wonder if there's a catch. Obviously, space and bandwidth aren't the only considerations; I have to think of customer support/service, admin features, uptime, speed etc., all of which are superb with HostGator; I'm just tempted by these relatively much larger offers of bandwidth and space because we will probably be needing quite a lot for our clients. I don't suppose the HostGator reseller bandwidth/space are being reviewed or might be increased any time soon? Any advice would be appreciated, as I need to made a decision fairly quickly. |

I'veseen numerous cases of folks leaving for the "too good to be true" offers and then returning when they discovered that poor tech support, uptime, and server speed was not worth the savings in cost. I've not had a reseller account here but did jump at the chance to get an unmanaged dedicated when I needed to move up from a shared account. I've had no complaints with support on the few times I have needed it.

Thanks for that. Yeah that's my main concern, that after moving everything over to the "too good to be true" provider it will turn out to be slow and/or have very poor support.
I anticipate moving to a dedicated at some point as well, so that's good to know. HostGator's reseller package limits do seem to have increased over the years quite a bit, so I'd still be interested to know if any increases are in the pipeline. |

I haven't heard of any plans for resource limit increases in the near future, but we move very quickly here and like you said, we do have a history of upgrading our plans fairly often.

![]() You don't just stick with a host for 3 years if you don't like them. I would say you have found your home, don't move just because something seems to good to be true and get screwed!

Open a reseller account here as your service has been great and others say the same. Why would you mess with your reputation over $_______ ???

You say yourself that the two other firms are "lower than most", which implies they're outliers. And, as Larry guesses, probably overselling (to an extent that could have unintended consequences for their clients' clients).
But more important, HG is now a known quantity to you--very important if you're starting a new phase of your business. Remember, to your clients, all problems will look like your fault.

Sometimes you have to test out a few services. Its part of the game.

In my experience, it's not the bandwidth and the storage space that limits the number of sites I can run on a VPS or reseller account, it's the amount of memory and the processor load, so those "unlimited" bandwidth and storage accounts are just a way to lure you in and then force you to upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server when you exceed the RAM alotted and processor load you're allowed.
I have moved to an HG reseller account and for half the cost of the VPS I was on, I'm getting three times the RAM and haven't run into any problems with processor load. I've added accounts, and am still comfortably under the storage limit for my plan. I also know that if I have a problem, HG is just a phone call, chat session, or support ticket away, and the support people actually behave as if they hear and understand my request when I do have to contact them. The other factor that I consider is the stability of the company I'm hosting with. With the economy the way it is, I want to be hosting with someone I think will be around for a while. I know others in the industry have gotten the email notice telling them they have a few weeks to move everything because the host is closing down. I don't have the feeling that's going to happen here anytime soon. |
