Question Need Help With IMAP Prefix - Apple Mail Mac OSX

Hello All..

Just joined up with HG and new here. First let me start by saying that I've contacted support numerous times on a variety of issues and the help I have rec'd has been tremendous...and the response times have been very impressive, so thanks to you guys!

I don't know where else to post this, so I'm posting here. I'm having a problem with HG's IMAP Path Prefix and Apple's Mail client. I contacted support about this and was told that the IMAP Prefix is "." (a period without the quotes)

The problem is, when I enter this in the appropriate field in the Mail prefs, and save, it's not there when I go back to check...the field is blank again.

So I tried typing in something longer like .inbox saved it and it was there when I checked again (I've since taken it out and it's blank again). So it appears that for some reason Apple's mail client won't recognize single character or just the . character in the IMAP path prefix field.

I emailed this to HG support, but all I was told was that . was necessary.

Now the thing is, if I type "." with the quotes, then save, and go back to check it's there. Would typing HG's . imap prefix with the quotes be acceptable in order for it to work correctly? I don't know what else to do b/c just entering . doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas or solutions as to what to do about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Regards,

Sainath

Nevermind...I think I figured it out. It seems that in Apple OS X Mail client the path prefix for IMAP should be INBOX. Ok, I'm not really sure if this is really how it should be technically, but it appears to be working (as I can best understand it) as my accounts are now grouped differently and any changes I make within webmail are then reflected in my Mail client and vice versa. And this is the only work around I could find as I cannot simply use . in my prefs and have it save successfully.

Regards,

Sainath

Dear Gator Guys & Gals,
OK, I GIVE UP!

I have been searching the forums and trying different things with no luck!

Here is the problem:
The application Apple Mail does not seem to recognize the "Drafts" folder or the "Sent " folder.

Set up as IMAP in Mail
If I use Thunderbird it works fine, I see all my sent emails and drafts are save - no problem.
But in mail it gives an error that reads "ERROR the message could not be saved"

Mail sent using Thunderbird is seen in the "sent" folder when using Apple Mail, but mail sent using Apple Mail is not seen in the sent folder.

Get it?

Weird, almost like there was no "permissions" for Mail to write or view those folders.
Works OK with RoundCube webmail too.

DOES THE ANSWER LIE IN THE "IMAP Path Prefix" field?
I have tried a few things there but no improvement.

It works for me. Are you sure you've clicked the triangle next to your account, and set the correct folders to do the right things-- for instance, set the folder called "sent" to be the sent mail folder?

Thanks for your help...

The only solution I have found is to store "Drafts" and "Sent" on the LOCAL computer rather than the server.
This is accomplished in the Mail / Preferences / Accounts / Mailbox Behaviors pane.
Deselect "Store draft messages on the server" and "Store sent messages on the server" checkboxes.

Not an excellent solution, but a good work around
You can then control drag and drop any sent messages to your server folder to make a copy.
As for me it is important to see what I have sent in reply to others so I just "backup" my sent items to the server
from the various computers I work on. (Home, Office, Laptop in my case.)

The problem seems to be with Mail and the way it handle IMAP.
I personally like Mail for it's OS X integration, so it is worth the trade-off.

My apple mail works perfectly with IMAP. I store everything on the server. Maybe you should PM me and I can help you get everything working like it should?

hi at all,

above quote works for me too, but is there already any solution to store sents and drafts on the server too? (using apple mail ver 2.1.@mac os x 10.4.11)

plus: i continually get the certificate-error when launching appl email. even though i alt-dragged the cert to the desktop and allowed any connection in keychain (as stated in mac help), the error keeps flashing.

thanks for your help

addition:

with INBOX in the imap prefix the "sent" + "trash" folders went doen from the inbox item in the sidebar down to the area where i have my smart and custom folders. the messages though are NOT stored there, neithere are they on the server (though sync with server is checked) - they're stored locally (like all the others pop-mailbox account's messages) and are never synced with the server.

thanks for helping me noob.

Select the real sent folder in the bottom of the left sidebar, that you know should be storing the sent. Go to mailbox-->use this mailbox fox-->sent. Do the same for drafts and trash.

thank you for your immediate reply.

i have done as you suggested, and i first noticed NO change. there were no messages on the server. BUT: when i logged in via "webmail.hostgator.com" i found the drafts and the sent messages (although this is not in the normal "sent"-folder but in an extra "sent messages" folder - but i think i can fix this for myself).

so it might be possible that it worked before that change as well just because i haven't accessed my webmail through the above method.

all the other possibilities via cpanel (horde, squirrel, ...) still don't show any mails.
awkwardly, the address via cpanel reads like: info@domain_com (UNDERLINE), via webmail.hostgator.com it reads info@domain.com (DOT). it seems i cannot change this and shouldn't be able to do so, because i only set up this one address, i do receive all mails, i can send and save all mails, but it won't sync with my webmail access possibilities at cpanel.
is this because i only have a "baby" account? i do not resell my webspace, i am the only user (with only one email address so far).

thanks for some further reply although i am really glad it already works in this way.
kind regards

i found this thread: http://forums.hostgator.com/showthread.php?t=23942 where there are some important posts...

but i also figured out, that i actually happen to have TWO email addresses, the first is my userlogin for cpanel (the user i created initially for using hostgator) and the second is my "handmade" address info@...
unfortunately i cannot login to cpanel using my info@... address.
so it got clearer for me why it wasn't working as i expected.
so now i use cpanel for hosting things, and webmail.hostgator.com for checking webmail when out of office.
if there are more comfortable solutions thanks for your info...

Running the iPod Touch and can only get the Inbox no other folders in the imap???

Set the prefix to INBOX with no avail - any suggestions.

"." is not a valid prefix either
