I've installed and uninstalled wordpress twice. Live support suggested to do so.
Installation goes fine but when I login to wp-adm all the images are broken "x" and there is no access to my dashboard. The page is there but no dashboard or link to dashboard with user options. Installation: Install on domain: mysite.com Install in directory: Blank...I assume the install needs to be in the root directory of domain for ths WP I do have one other website hosted with HG in this cpanel. Could it be something screwy with that? Question: Am I doing something wrong, if so, what? Question": Is it possible that HG support would login my cpanel and troubleshoot this problem? |

Have you enabled Hotlink protection in your cPanel? That can cause broken images. Not sure about the problem with the Dashboard but I would check on Hotlink protection first.

Hello,
GvilleRick is correct. I currently see that you do have hotlink protection enabled. Go ahead and disable this and see if that works out for you. Let me know if you have any questions! |

I think you're right. How come when I go to Fantastico to add word press it is showing these domains.
1.myinsuranceanswers.com 2.kids-games-party.com 3.kids-games-party.myinsuranceanswers.com I only have two domains..number 1 is main domain..number 2 is addon domain. I've been trying to install wordpress to #2 I want to delete the main domain as I'm not renewing. Would this cause a problem? I just want to host WP sites. I know I got lots of questions! |

Something else I noticed in my Hotlink Protection, there's a field that says "Block direct access for these extentions" jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp
Below that is a box to check that says "allow direct request" this box is unchecked I'm not understanding this..why would I want to block access to those extentions? Last edited by burtf51; 01-13-2009 at 05:35 PM. Reason: add note |

Hello,
Changing your main domain name can't be done by deleting it unfortunately. Due to the amount of work required on our end to make this happen (mostly from certain limitations in cPanel), we've set up a form that you can fill out if you want this done: https://secure.hostgator.com/changedomain.php As for blocking access to those extensions, suppose someone found a nice picture on your site, and hotlinked it (which means essentially loading the picture from the URL.) Now lets say that they are hotlinking this on a popular website, such as MySpace. This means that every person that views that page will load the picture from your site, which could drastically raise the load on your server, and skew your page hits. You would want to block people from doing this, and this is what hotlink protection is for. Last edited by GatorDavid; 01-13-2009 at 05:44 PM. |

The third option is due to the way cPanel works. An addon domain is also a subdomain of your main account.
As for changing the domain, I would suggest doing that and changing the domain to the one you plan to use. If you set up that domain as an addon you will have to delete it, if I recall correctly, and it would be easier to do so before setting up the site. |

The long answer: you've got to distinguish domains from file structure (the way directories are set up in your account, and on the server). cPanel is the way you interface with the server to associate domains with your account and its file structure. In other words, the directory which holds your domain's content is not the domain itself--it is only where the server looks for its files. |

You know this cpanel with it's main domain, addon domain, addon to the addon domain..isn't for the faint of heart. Boy it's the pits when you don't know crap from crapola and have to figure out, ask, beg, plead with others to make sense of something you don't understand. I've spent all dang day back and forth with support, posting on forums, installing and uninstalling, scratching my head and I'm worse off now than before I started. All this just to install a a darn WP blog. Now I understand why people pay others to do the things they don't know how to do. |

In my opinion the best way to start out if you are not familiar with cPanel and the way it works is to work with one domain. Addon domain adds a level of complexity that can make things much more complicated.
I'm not sure what you plan to do with the main domain that you are using right now. You said you don't plan to renew it but it appears the domain is not up for renewal for a couple of months. If you have no real desire to keep the site content then I would say the best option would be to submit a ticket to change the domain and ask support to reprovision the account so it is like a new account. Another option would be to purchase a new account for the domain you want to use for the WordPress site and then cancel the other account when you are ready to take it down. Concentrating on one domain will make it simpler to install WordPress and learn how cPanel works and how WordPress works. After a short time you will be more comfortable and it will be less frustrating to learn more about addon domains and other options. |

Thanks guys, well so much for my great idea about putting up quite a few WP sites with HG. Now I'm back to square one. Hmmm, have to rethink the whole situation.
I have a few sites I've been working on but thought since I had the content I'd try some smaller niche sites with WP. Decorating Country Home Grenada Business Directory |
