Hello,
I'm new by hostgator and have a question before buying. I need advice, which server to apply for a forum that currently has 669 members. I use a SMF forum (www.simplemachines.org/). Daily active members to be 45 (the highest one reached 362 memebers). Currently I have a lease with studio4web.com and I'm not satisfied with their service. Thx |

You want to go dedicated / VPS or shared?
From the stats, and if you don't have a plugin/addon that sucks a lot of resources, I guess you can go for the hatchling & upgrade as/if you need.

I want to go shared. Well, i have 13 mods install in forum, but i don't know whether these modes affect a lot of resources.

Some mods can cause problems but it is impossible to really know until you have things up and running. There is a money back guarantee so you can try things out and see how it works for you. If you outgrow the shared server you can upgrade later.

I admin two forums, one (A) on a shared-reseller server, the other (B) on a VPS. Forum A only has a few people viewing the site at any given moment, but about 20+ in a fifteen minute activity period. The forum has some graphics and pulls a lot from the database with each page load. It does extremely well on the shared-reseller server. Forum B is much more active, with peaks of 100+ users (members and guests) at any given moment. It definitely needs a VPS. |

Thanks for your answers.
I think the shared server is sufficient for our applications forum. I figured out, that's not a problem in the forum because I have 13 small modes installed, the forum is 310 mb big, has 669 members, out of which about 40 per day, so it is impossible to spend huge resources. Sorry for my english, i'm from Croatia. Best regards, Sebastian |

There is a problem if a shared hosting account can't handle a forum with only 40 unique visitors a day.

forums take a lot of CPU and HDD access + Traffic.
If you want stability and growth with no lag - go with the smallest Hostgator VPS offer, that should do the trick and not so expensive!
