I think they mean a few hours total for all the servers. My particular site was only down like half an hour or something.

All my other sites are hosted with GATE (formerly WinSave), and in all the years I've been with them they've never once had to bring my sites completely down in order to apply server upgrades or do maintenance.

Gate wasn't a recommended host for a drupal site, so I looked around and finally chose HostGator out of about 5 hosts based in large part on their supposed reliability and uptime. Downtime is downtime, whether it's due to a server crash or software/server upgrades. I've only been with HostGator since February, and this downtime doesn't exactly give me tons of confidence going forward.

How often can I expect my site to be down for server and software upgrades if I remain with HostGator? Every few months? Twice a year? Once a year?

Perhaps that's because they never did any updates. Or they did them without you noticing.

In the last year my server has only been down approx 3 times. All for upgrades, not due to any other failures.

Mine is down also. Said something about maintenance the first time...now I get this:
Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Try and show some patience and restraint.

Nothing worse than someone hovering over your shoulder asking, "are you going to be finished soon."

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

Can hardly wait 'til they hit Gator734. I figure they should just about have the routine down cold by then. Glad I don't have any InnoDBs

Who are the asshats managing hostgator?

I have really enjoyed [loved] HostGator; but seriously, wtf?

Unbackedup Downtime at Primetime with No Notice???

I sent out a bunch of coupons/promo/hype about 2 minutes before HG went offline. 7pm Pacific/10pm Eastern. Best online attendance I can get from my customers.
(This is something we do once or twice a year. We are not advertising freaks, we send out stuff rarely, and only when we have something to say & our customer respond accordingly. I timed it for peak customer logged on hours.)

HG decides to kill all websites for some very enlightened reason.

Suggestions:

1>Use back up servers and keep your customers websites intact during an upgrade. I can do this, it's cheap and easy. Isn't this what everyone does?

2>How about you do your upgrade at 3am on a Sunday not the fun hour for the get home from work urban professional cool kid crowd.

3>ummm... Let people know? I tried to make this nice for me and mine but I could have done it at a different time myself. Email us that our sites will be GONE from 7-8 pm pst? At least with an email I would not have actively alienated my customer base.

Yesterday I would rave like crazy about how awesome HostGator has been. Today I am pissed.

/Rant over

Before the upgrade my site is working perfectly fine.

I'm on gator617 and my site seems perfectly fine. The db is still intact and my site is running at its normal performance levels.

In cPanel; using the HG theme, there is a section for announcements (I've posted a screenshot here and the screenshot was taken as of writing this post) which showed that they were going to be updating the servers. Having worked for a datacenter as a server admin, I know that when doing these upgrades with such a huge customer base it is hard as hell to send out emails to every single account letting them know that their server may go down for upgrades or whatnot. Also, sometimes these upgrades go great and other times they get screwed up along the way. One major suggestion that I could offer is to be sure that all your sites are updated with the most current versions of the web app you are using (if you are using one [such as Zen-cart, osCommerce, Joomla, etc) and this will help you to avoid any problems with these kinds of upgrades as the code is optimized for the most current versions of Apache, PHP and MySQL (just some examples).

Anyways, sorry to go on a little rant there, but give the HG staff a break as they are working diligently to make everyone happy as well as keep their servers secured and running at max performance.

Watch the language there young "lady". People get banned from this forum with language like that.

It's called an upgrade not a "wtf". Those things happen on $10 shared server accounts. If you aren't happy with it, then get yourself a dedicated server where you have control over such things.

Yes, yes, it's still just a software upgrade. Have a cup of tea.... it will be alright soon.

You obviously didn't attend the how to upgrade servers for people with $10 hosting accounts class. The answer is no, they don't keep sites running whilst performing upgrades.

3 am where in the world? There are more countries out there than the US of A. There will always be somebody affected by the timing of upgrades.

Shiloh,

I apologize for the inconveniences and the frustrations. I can totally understand your point of view on this situation, however we have to do these upgrades on our servers. Unfortunately, it is not feasible to keep websites running during this time, as most sites are database driven, and if we keep MySQL running during the upgrade, almost all databases on the server will be corrupted.

We try to keep our upgrades during the night, however since we are an international company, we cannot make everyone happy in this situation unfortunately.

I checked your site, lilanelson.org and it is up and running at this time. If you are still seeing issues with your site, feel free to PM me and I'll take a look at it ASAP.
