I've got a client who needs to access a MySQL Database from a remote application based on their computer. I would expect to know these fields:
Host: Username: Password: database: And then the application would interact with the database. Is this possible? |

Yes this can be done.

It is possible but you also have to add either the client's IP to the Access Hosts section in the MySQL options of cPanel or add a wildcard to allow remote access.

And it's likely already done, but make sure the port for remote access is open as well.

Hello vanroojdotcom, This can be done. First you will need to add your clients IP address into your cPanel using the Remote mySQL Icon. Your Host will be your shared IP address of the server that you are on, username and password will be specified within your MySQL Databases icon in which you will assign to the Database. The mySQL port number that will be used will be port: 3306. If you have any questions, issues, or concerns, feel free to contact us via support email, Live Chat or toll free number. |

Something new for me, I didn;t know that it can be done from cPanel. Used to edit the mysql config file on dedicated server, but my impression was that since it is not possible on shared server, such facility is not available.

It has been available on cPanel for quite some time but I believe the location in cPanel has changed from time to time.

Remote access to mySql? Is this a joke? I have set up my IP in the cPanel and it lets me login using the mysql.exe client, but when I try to connect to my database, it says "access denied for the user......". So, what is this? What's the use to be able to login if you don't have access to the database???
Another thing: somewhere in your website it says you allow creating and executing stored procedures in mysql. Yes, that is correct, but only the main database administrator (user) has the right to execute. And it cannot grant execution priviledge to a more restricted user. What kind of security is this if you are forcing us to use the admin to connect to the database in our website? And another thing: the damn contact form in the cPanel isn't working. After writing the message, I click ok and I get "sorry, your email cannot be sent. try again later". How many times should one try? I tried 5 times. This is another joke from this joke host of yours. The support is lousy, by the way, after trying to explain the problem, I get a "ticket number" and a "have a nice day". What was I supoosed to do with that number? I'm sorry the decision doesn't belong to me (I'm just a programmer) but If I were the owner of the domain, I would start searching for another hosting right away. |
