Hi,
I'm thinking about taking out a reseller plan, but I'd like to know if you allow direct connections to MySQL via port 3306 so that I could connect via ODBC? Sorry if this is a repeat question, I did try doing a search before I posted but got a message telling me I did not have permission to view the page. |

You can connect directly to the mysql database, yes. I believe it is that port, but I am not 100% sure. I am sure you can connect though.

Excellent news! It's so hard to find a host that allows direct connections without charging a fortune for it.

Oh, forgot to ask...does the same apply for the shared hosting plans?

yup!! I have a shared hosting (baby croc) & I have access to the MySQL via port 3306!!
One thing you have to do from the CPanel first tho. Go the the "MySQL Databases" & at the end of the page, give your IP the right to access the DB/s. You can use wildcards to if u have a dynamic IP.

I connect with mySQL Control Panel directly, but you have to remember that the mySQL database has to be setup to allow direct access by IP address or IP range first.
The connection strings for PHP use localhost, not a domain or IP, so they don't need to be setup specfically, but you will not be able to access mySQL without setting the IP address for the machine that will connect. If you have an IP that may change, I suggest you use a one octet wildcard, like 127.0.0.* |

Ok, that's all very helpful, thank you. One other thing...does hostgator offer port tunneling via SSH and PuTTY so that a secure connection to the database can be established?

No, SSH is not available due to security reasons.
