Default My (unneeded?) switch to VPS

Ok, so I've been doing a lot of reading on VPS's for a while, but maybe I had the wrong impression. I was hoping to share my scenario and get some input on what I should do.

Background:
I currently run a reseller account and host mostly websites that I have designed, or websites of people that I know. I make enough to cover my costs, to have a place to keep my personal stuff, and a little extra per month for my pocket.

I recently re-designed the website for my current employer, who happens to be a large organization. Unfortunately, I cannot host that site under my reseller account because of a conflict of interest in having the organization pay me for the hosting (it's a long story).

QUESTION 1) So, my theory was hey, I should get a VPS for the new site. It would give us a lot of room to grow (it's a pretty popular site), and it would also be a good learning opportunity for me. The plan was to move the site over to the VPS, make sure it's working, and have everyone in the organization test it for 30 days before I change the DNS to point to the new site from the old host.

I purchased a VPS account with Cpanel/WHM and it was set up yesterday. Hostgator quickly transferred the account from my reseller to the VPS. Unfortunately I was advised that I could not view the site by IP address until the nameservers were set up. The nameservers are ns1.myorganization.org and ns2.myorganization.org. Since myorganization.org already exists and is running on another host, I can't set up the nameservers until I want to switch, right? I want the employees of the organization to have access via the IP address to test and give feedback.

QUESTION 2) Finally, was switching to a VPS a mistake? I am pretty familiar with Cpanel/WHM, but there are so many new options. I went through the forums and did all of the suggested security and setup options through WHM that were suggested. I am still concerned that with less than tons of knowledge, it will be less secure or reliable than a reseller account or shared account. Any experiences?

This site is pretty popular. It's no cnet or google.. but I was concerned that it would be using too much power from a normal shared account that I would be suspended and the site would have a chance of going down. After reading some other posts, maybe that's not the case since that is pretty rare? Should I switch to a reseller account or would that be the same as a plain old shared account since they are both shared?

Any feedback to my issues would be greatly appreciated!!!

Current Tickets:

BDQ-13310916 (open) - the ticket regarding viewing the site by IP
GGW-13308422 (On hold) - the request to transfer ticket (completed)

Thanks,
Alex

I checked with one of the admins and they said you should be able to. I have them checking on this to see why its not resolving by IP.

The admins should be replying shortly. You can now access it by http://ip/~username replacing that with your ip and username for that site.

Well, I have no much experience in VPS hosting. I was reading about it for a while, planing to switch to one from a shared account, while I don't have any issue with my shared, but just to make it more reliable and I need full root access to run some applications and to add more domains while not causing damage to the shared server. I'm pretty sure that a VPS server would be better than reseller if you need more power or resources. But if you're a reseller, then a reseller is better than a VPS for you as it has all the reseller tools you need.

That statement is not correct.
