Default Where is my thread?

Yesterday I posted a thread here asking for support, but it has not been approved. Why?

The forum is primarily for peer support. If you are having a technical problem you should contact Live Chat or open a ticket. You can also reply back to this post to ask your question again.

Thank you. I am not a customer yet and wanted to ask a pre-sale question. It's better for everyone if I ask a question in public since this would possibly help other users which might have a similar question.

I am interested in a shared hosting plan and wanted to ask if this is suitable for my needs. I want to set up a Joomla CMS for posting daily news with a discussion forum and a jDownloads powered download database in which I intend to upload a few hundred free 0-4 MB applications for pc and other electronic devices. Of course every file is legal.

So is this allowed with a shared hosting plan or do I have to fear to be kicked out? How many daily visitors are allowed? Is a shoutbox or ajax based chat allowed?

Thanks

You have a point here. it is good to hear direct from users/clients of hostgator since you guys are the actual users.

While it is beneficial to hear from users, for a definitive answer to the questions raised it would be better to contact support directly. You can try Live Chat although I would probably send an email to sales at hostgator dot com and ask there. The admins do not always check the forum.

There are a number of posts in the Pre-Sales area about using software including Joomla. Many run Joomla sites and there should be no problems. It is not possible to give exact info on number of users allowed, etc. since it can vary. The Terms of Service (TOS) link at the bottom of this page has more information on what is allowed.

After seeing a few staff members reading this thread and not replying I think it's not neccessary to contact the support via live chat or email. Their job is to respond here and if they don't do it, they don't do their job right.

I read the terms of service but of course it's generalized. I'm seeking a bit more detail and explanation but if the staff don't bother to reply here after reading and not approving my first thread, I don't think I should bother with hostgator at all.

What you're asking for sounds like it would work just fine with any of our shared plans, seven. Assuming like you said, that you have the rights to distribute all of the files that you said you wanted to put up for download; it should be alright. You can definitely use a shoutbox or ajax based chat on your site.

As far as the visitors that is a very hard number to say exactly what your limit is. We don't specifically limit you on a number of visitors per day. We limit the load and usage you put on the server, so it really depends on how heavy your website is, what your users are doing, and what else is happening on the server at the time. There isn't any specific limit as per how many people can view your site at once per say.

Also please try to keep in mind that although we do offer this forum as a form of support, it is indeed a peer support forum. We try to give as much help as we can on here as possible, however if you would indeed like an answer to a pre-sales or support question I definitely suggest trying one of our main methods of support (live chat, telephone, tickets) to get that question answered in a timely manner. I hope you have a good day and we look forward to you becoming a customer of HostGator!

questions concerning shared accounts are always going to be fuzzy because no two web sites are the same. There is a "guest-a-mator" if you want to call it that:

http://www.numion.com/

Shared web hosting is made and geared for customers who can not afford to build their own network systems, and as such, those customers have to purchase more resources as needed (upgrade) after they experiment with what they want to do and compare that against what they have.

Some businesses spend more on IT costs then they have to, in order to handle spikes or for redundancy. While it would be nice to spend your money one day and say that's what I need, the process changes daily according to varying visitor rates as well as when the pace of technology changes.

While you save many of the costs associated with computer servers by using shared hosting, the drawback is you have to monitor and determine your own needs, and the savings can be significant compared to hiring someone to manage that for you, making the "drawback" a non-issue comparatively speaking once you wrap your arms around that concept.

The ability to use more than one nameserver allows people to add servers as they need to expand the appetite of your web users or audience.

Seven, to answer your questions based on my understanding, all the scripts including the ajax chat, download etc should work fine on Hostgator shared server. However, it is hard to give an estimate on number of visitors allowed. Hostgator limits the accounts based on CPU usage. You could start with a shared hosting account and as you grow, you can move on to a VPS / Dedicated server when needed.

Ajax based chat could take some resources with frequent connections to server, unlike user clicking through pages. That could be a problem when you have a large number of users online at a time. Again, there is no hard and fast rule to know the limit, just start your site and optimize/upgrade when needed.
