My year hosting package is up in a few days and I am writing a review like others, to express both what I found was great with HostGator and what I didn't like.
Unfortunately I will not be continuing my hosting service with them. I've never had a problem with downtime whatsoever, always loved the interface with cPanel and the support was always great when I needed help. In all honesty the real reason I am leaving HostGator is their lack of will to take care of their current customers when their plans are nearing the end and they want to renew. I may have a unique situation but regardless, a company that bases themselves so highly on their customer service, yet won't strike a deal with current customers is beyond belief. My problem is that I am going to need to upgrade my hosting plan, simply because I need to add another domain. I sold one site and picked up 2 and now because the hatchling plan only supports 1 domain, I must upgrade. I have no problem with that. The main problem is that regardless if you pay for a month or a year, it's $9.95. Probably a reasonable price if you aren't tight on finances, but as a college student, that's the life I live. It's ridiculous that they offer the 20% off SNOWMAN deal on the main page of the site, yet it is for new customers only. You can find this out by talking to any sales agent, yet it says no where on the site that it is for new customers. They base it on this purely because the only place to activate this code is registering a new account, not upgrading your existing account, or not when it renews (according to two different sales reps). You could still activate the code with by opening up a new account but thats fraudulent and I'm not an a-hole. Plus I have no doubt you'd get caught anyway. I know I may sound like a complete baby complaining over $24 ($119.40 normal, $95.52 reduced) but that is definitely a substantial amount of money for me when I have to count every little piece coming in from my site (not much) and having to live and pay tuition. I understand running a business and all, but another part of running your business is keeping your customers. HostGator was great while it lasted, but their reluctance to take care of current customer renewals is pretty upsetting. They should keep in mind that money does matter to some, even when it is so little. |
