I've been hosted here at HostGator for about 9 months, almost 10.
I have been pretty satisfied with my Shared Hosting account that I have with HG. Server speed, uptime, features, and everything else have been awesome! I've only had three problems with HG and one was my fault, forgot to delete vBulletin when I installed it in another folder. The other two problems that I have ran into are.. Support: I rarely use support, but when I do (to add DNS Entries to my account, ask a pre-sale question, etc.) it is usually pretty slow on the responses. Since I rarely use support, this is not a major factor for myself but is something that should be kicked up a notch. The other problem was related to support as well, when they went to add a DNS entry to my account, they must of slipped up somewhere which caused my site to be unreachable. But the tech that first responded saw nothing wrong with the site and it remained down until another tech responded and fixed the problem. Surprises: When I first bought my Shared account, as many people have stated there are some surprises that are thrown in with your account, like HostGator's custom 404 pages - not a big deal since it's easy to change but this is paid hosting! Also, when I tried to change a domain name, support directed me to a form and it requested for me to authorize a $5 charge to change the domain on my account, which I think is ridiculous.
