No, I think he's trying to simulate the Vista 'experience', the look and feel, for visitors.

It's always better to come up with the content first, then the SEO terms, than the other way around.

And he hasn't been back to see responses to his post nor has he visited his own site in over 2 weeks (or he'd have fixed it or come back here for help.)

Then you may want to take the link out of your signature.

Was just talking to one of my clients from Germany.
He said he read somewhere that a "Golden Rule" for domain registrations is to not use city names and car registration plates as part of the domain name.
That is to avoid legal issues.

I have registered a couple of domains with city names in the url and never had any legal issues.
How else are you going to build a local business directory site, and promote it successfully if you can't use the city name in the url?

Anyone any idea if this is a local German restriction or is it dud information?

What kind of legal issues could that cause? I'm not sure what he said makes much sense, at least for America.

It could be either, but at least in the U.S., as Matt says, it doesn't apply--the .gov TLD can be used for official municipal sites but city names with other TLDs are fair game.

I just passed the issue back to him as the client and asked him to do the registration himself using a German based registar.

Not selling a domain is not going to make me any poorer but at least the client is happy enough and that all important client-business relationship has went up a couple of notches.

A very, very good way to handle it.

One of the hardest things to learn/accept in client-based business--construction, internet services, dog grooming, etc.--is that clients are more, not less, impressed when you tell them you can't or won't do something and that it should be handled by a specialist.

Oddly, every time I've told a client that I didn't do some specific thing, they have come back and asked for something else. Clients enjoy honesty.

Hence why HG is doing so well... but some people around here still think HG is out to get them...

I think you did the right thing by acknowledging his concerns, (whether real or imagined), and then accommodating him as best you can...

There's few things worse than trying to convince someone that something they read somewhere is bunk and you should do it my way 'cause I know better. People tend to get their back up at this, (so as long as it doesn't hurt his business), it's better to keep him happy and allow him to proceed in harmony with whatever beliefs he may already have.
