Update: Just talked to hostgator support on IM (which is a very nice feature by the way). Here's the info I got from the guy (or girl) on the other end of the IM.

Quote:
A big security exploit came out. We are doing kernel upgrades on all boxes. Most boxes reboot backup within a minute some don't take the new kernals and require manual intervention from dc. Your box didn't come backup waiting for dc to manually do it.
More to come...

When a kernel upgrade fails we have to contact the datacenter who then sends a tech down to the server. The tech then plugs his console in, and has a couple kernels listed to boot the box up in. We save the old kernel as "old kernel" so the tech then chooses old kernel and the box boots back up in the old kernel. This is around a 20 minute process for them to go down to the box / boot it up again. You had the misfortune of being on the box that gave us the most trouble. The system administrator working on it attempted two times so about 2 x 20 minute outages. Both kernel upgrade attempts failed. He ran into trouble with the Raid your box had on it.

We had one of our other system admins who has more experience with the raid configuration upgrade your server’s kernel just a few minutes ago. It upgraded successfully this time and had only a minute downtime like it should have from the first attempt.

Your uptime will be great with us, don't let this kernel mess fool you.

Thanks!

The planet datacenter had some network issues today. Your server, and one dedicated client were the only 2 boxes affected in the network.

Datacenter having network issues is out of our control, however we do honor the 99.9% uptime guarantee so email in your site to request a refund.

I thought I'd take a quick sec and post here when things ARE going well. HostGator has been the best, besides the few aforementioned hiccups. I'm glad I switched to HostGator and I WILL be recommending them to other people.

Good Job HG!

I'm so relieved to see this story has a happy ending I remember reading your initial post the first time and thinking "Crap. I hope this guy doesn't leave just because of this." Because HG, as you've seen, is far superior overall than any other hosting company. I'm just glad I can be a part of it.
