The slightly too cutesy-zen approach is a small price to pay for a great overview of backup theory...and the really valuable info reached via the "click for more information" link at the bottom of each of the seven koans.
The "more information" is not cutesy; zen-related only in the sense that good backup procedures save your butt (my words, not theirs); and tells you what to do, and why you should. The Tao Of Backup Keep going through the epilogue to the Sanctuary, which is a useful index. It includes a link to the Wailing Wall, where tragic stories about backup failures have some further gems (what's really tragic is that more recent entries are spammy dreck, but a) remarkably few of them and b) the titles make it obvious which to skip). (This is how worthwhile it is. When I'm empress, people won't get a PC license until they go through each of the koans and read the "more information" stuff.)

I hope that went on your "list" thread. That's a good one.
There really should be a personal computing litmus test... |

Most backup info is either too specialized ("Town of Murky Lake H.R. department, interim backup procedures"); too proprietary or self-serving ("Dattoo subcutaneous backup chip: quick start guide. Use Dattoos, so you won't lose! Unlike any other back up hardware..."); or useless ("It's a good idea to store your backup in a safe place".) Some people think that's what Linux is for...

I didn't make it sticky--I went to edit my post and couldn't find the thread, so I thought I'd accidentally deleted it.

Gwyneth, would you like to lead the group in singing, "We Wish You A Merry Linuxmus", please?

My own favorite is "Good King Linus (wrote an OS)", even if you need to pronounce OS to rhyme with gross. Others include "We three Unix variants are/bearing loads for servers afar...", but I should stop before they unsticky the thread.

Well...I've never been able to make a backup with my shared hosting account unfortunately. While I realize the importance of backups...there's nothing I can personally do on my end about it. I get time outs every single time.
