Hi there,
I'm about to sign up with Host Gator after a very long time with another host. In signing up with Host Gator, I expect to be using Wordpress for the first time and presumably using Fantastico to install it. My question is this: On my old website from which I am upgrading, I have two blogs: one with news from my career and one with information about my running. I used to keep these blogs separate using an old version of Movable Type. I understand that Wordpress doesn't support multiple blogs, at least on the surface. I'm wondering if I can have multiple instances of Wordpress in my Host Gator account. If so, how would I go about doing this? Thanks for any pre-sales answers you may have. I expect to be signing up sometime within the week. Cheers, Ben |

And just for clarification, I wrote "multiple instances of Wordpress in my Host Gator account," and by that I meant that I wanted to have two Wordpress blogs for a single domain.

Look into Wordpress MU, it is designed specifically for multiple blogs on a single website. It is not part of the Fantastico offerings, but I didn't find it too difficult to install manually.

Thanks for the recommendation, mrcycling. I looked over the installation steps for Wordpress MU. If I found it a bit outside my abilities to install, ...
a) would Host Gator technical support help me to install Wordpress MU? b) or, would Host Gator allow multiple instances (for multiple blogs) or straight Wordpress? (If so, how?) Ben |

Yes, you can install multiple instances of WordPress on an account. You would just specify a different folder for each installation.

Rick, thank you. Having never used Fantastico, would it only install once instance of Wordpress or can I use it to install more than
one instance? I assume just one but I thought I'd ask. Ben |

As many as you want, as far as they are in different directories.

Can you use fantastico to install directly into a subdomain?
For example I want the url to be subdomainname.mysite*com instead of mysite*com/subdomainname . Is that possible to do? |

Yes you can use fantastico to install directly into subdomain.
using cpanel when you create a sub domain it just adds a folder into your public_html folder. for example: test.domain.com will be located in public_html/test/ so using fantastico you can tell it to install which ever package you want in to the test folder and it will be located on your sub domain. |

Hi there,
I know this is an older post but I've found a great solution to this question. I believe with word press 3.0 +, "multi site" been enabled from one word press install. Word Press MU code with the regular version of wordpress have merged. You can now easily install one instance of word press and manage both your sites or more. You can even have top level domains working with domain mapping. A detailed video tutorial specific to setting this up on host gator is available at this link: http://michaelscottseocompany.com/in...-on-hostgator/ I'm posting this here cause it took me hours to figure this out for host gator on my own until I found this you tube series. I've followed if from start to finish and have it running on a business with dedicated I.P. and SSL I believe the author demonstrates this on a baby croc account Thanks to the author! Anyone wanting multiple blogs on one account should consider this solution, It rocks! Enjoy! JT |

I have a question. I'm running multisite wordpress (two instances actually, one as sub domain and another as sub-directory).
how does one go about mapping the top level domain to a sub-directory wordpress multi site install? wondering if there is a plugin for that ;-) |

You can't actually "map" your HG account's primary domain to a subfolder under its public_html document root. What you can do is to use a "dummy" domain as the HG account's primary and then specify subfolders for all of your actual domains as addons. See this thread.

Best option would be MU.

Bear in mind that if you install WordPress via Fantastico, the installer creates a MySQL database each time the installer is run. (I haven't installed or worked with MU, so I can't vouch for its behavior.)
If your hosting plan only allots a certain number of MySQL databases, then you could run out, at which point Fantastico will report that it's unable to complete the current WP installation. WordPress has evolved incredibly over the last couple of years, from "just a blogging platform" into a full-fledged Content Management System that enables you create membership sites, forums, review sites - just about any type of website you can imagine! With the incredible variety of themes and plugins available, it boils down to figuring out what you want WordPress to do, and then finding the plugins and themes to make it happen! But I have a feeling that I'm preaching to the choir here.... |

@jeanne38654: Most domain registrars give you the ability to redirect your Top Level Domain to any URL you wish. (Affiliate marketers do it all the time to mask their affiliate links, and to project authority - not to mention certain SEO benefits.)
The "redirect" function should be available in your domain registrar's "control panel" (NOT to be confused with cPanel), and should propagate fairly quickly (depending on which registrar you use) once you configure it. |

Color me confused. I'm using WordPress and on the Hatchling Plan. I'd like to have more than one blog. I thought I'd found the answer in post No. 10 by Joseph Tak - unfortunately the tutorial he linked to no longer shows.
I understand I can use more than one directory to point to different blogs, but am confused as to whether I have to do a new installation of WordPress for each - this doesn't seem very efficient. But admittedly, I have not tried this yet. Would I be better off just upgrading to the Baby Plan??? |

Watch this video, it tells you how to install two or more blogs using cPanel.
