I've read some answers on the forum, but I am still not quite understanding.
I just bought a baby gator account with a new domain name for my husbands site. An hour ago a put in a transfer of my domain name, to hostgator...so that I can have both of our websites under one hosting account. I was under the impression that my babygator account would host as many domains as I wanted. NOT as a subdomain...but would host each domain independently so that we could have our own domain names. I have no desire to have my website address at the end of his url link. Can someone please break this down for me, so I know what do? In the mean time, I think I made a big mistake switching to hostgator...and now that my old domain is in the processing of getting tranferred there is no backing out without losing money. I feel like if there is no way for me to do this, then the advertising was seriously misleading. Thank you! |

You would need to use the Add-on domain option in your cPanel. This will create a site under your webspace and can be accessed using the second domain name. For more on using this option you can look at the Knowledgebase for specific steps to take.
The site will be in a folder inside of your public_html but entering the second domain into the address bar in the browser will go straight to that folder and will not include your first domain. You would use your cPanel to set up email accounts, databases, etc. If you want to have a separate cPanel for the second domain you would need a second hosting account or a reseller account. |

Or setup a reseller account, but I don't think she probably needs that.

I personally think your biggest mistake was panicking about losing money before reading one of the 1,000 threads already on this board or asking HG support about the subject. As the page (and other posters) here have said, you can do what you want using the add-on domain feature. It's easy.

But it's a little over-dramatic to say 'no backing out without losing money': HG does offer a refund if you cancel within the first month. |

I think AvalonBaily meant their old site. First of all, its always a good idea to make a back up of your site. Having an addon domain name is confusing. I currently have 3 websites on my site. It will be 2 soon. I came to host gator because I needed a host for a second domain name of mine. I found that I was able to host as many domain names as I needed. That was something my old host misadvertised about able to having multiple websites on one account.
Anyway, Its a bit confusing setting it up. Listen to these guys about how to set it up. It definitely works. Yes you have your second domain name but it is also a subdomain. Both direct to the same part of the webserver. To you its all on the same webserver and thats the only way it can be done so that you can take care of all of your sites in one place, which is good thing. You don't want to have more than one link to go to when you need to load your files up. To the outside world, they do not know any difference. |

Thank you for all your help.
I wasn't literally panicking. I just don't like not understanding what is going on, when generally I find myself pretty computer savvy. Apologies if I offended anyone. But I appreciate your help, thank you. |

Goody! I think I found out why I was so confused.
Because I put in a transfer request when I didn't need to (dumb me), I now how have to wait between 3-14 days for it to be transferred to hostgator. So I can't really do anything on the hostgator end, includeing the addon and dns stuff, until that happens. I was having issues with the big picture and thank to your help I think I finally have it. Blech. I'm assuming they will send me an email when the transfer is complete? Thank you very much for all the help! Next time I won't write on the forum after being online all day -- makes for seemingly crabby forum girl. Appreciate the help and fast responses !

As a person who has done transfer hosts multiple times. First of all, you have signed up to host gator. Thats the first step.
The next step is to go to wherever you registered your domain names originally and change the dns to whatever hostgator gave to you. It usually has hostgator in the name. Mine does anyway. It should not take to long to propogate to the new server. At most it usually takes 3 days. You do not want to cancel your other host until everthing is propogated. Make sure you save your files from your other host so that you can load it right up to this one. I hope that makes sense to you. They will not email you letting you know that everything is propogated. |
