We can split it functionality like the database on one server and hosting on the other or we can do Round Robin DNS to alternate between the servers.

You would be responsible for keeping them in sync for Round Robin.

so if i had a script that allowed people to back their PC's to our servers, like mozzy, could we connect three large sata hard drive servers to work with our one domain?

I hadn't heard of that script but you would have root access to install it.

It sounds possible but as for the inner workings you may want to check with support. At the least you should be able to set up subdomains to point to the different servers if you weren't meaning Round Robin DNS.

We can get up to 2TB drives so that shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, we have the standard dedicated server, how many 2TB drives can we install?

The newer servers can handle 3 drives so it may be better to get a custom server set up. Shoot us an email to sales and I can get a quote for you.

We can get other ones that hold more drives but they are custom setups. I think the largest I have gotten a quote on can hold 6 drives. That one had to be a dual quad because of the chassis if I remember right.

So say you have 6 drives with a 2 TB hard drive per drive. Will those drives be dedicated to the /home/ directories?

hmm, you are thinking about small cloud?
if I am not mistaken nginx could do that stuff very well, one domain and multiple physical servers all running nginx, check it out here http://nginx.org/
I am sitting on nginx, and it is pretty good compared to apache, different core design, but pain to install in root shell, takes a lot of nerve

I am not sure of the details for 6 drives but I know if they use the secondary drive for websites instead of backups they do it as /home2.

I think the only drawback/thing to remember is that one cpanel account can't span multiple drives if I remember right.

Hmmm, so technically the only use of six 2 TB drives would be for backing up clients?

You can have multiple drives for hosting. It's just that one single cpanel account can't span drives. Another way to not worry about that is to set the drives up in a RAID so it sees it as a single drive. If you are going to have that much disk space it is recommended to have it in a RAID for speed and/or redundancy.

I thought RAID was a mirror of the two drives?

Yes if it's RAID 1.

How does RAID help the speed of a drive?

By having drives configured in a Striped (Raid 0) array the data is then stored across multiple drives. This reduces i/o overhead. Your mileage may vary depending on the environment but for the most part there is a significant improvement. With a striped array, however, you have multiple points of failure since there are multiple drives and the array is dependent on all of them.
