Default multiple domains...

Hello!

This isn't exactly 'pre-sales', as I've actually just signed up....but I thought I'd ask here since I'm probably the only person around that DOESN'T know the answer to this question, lol.

Anyways, I picked a hosting plan that allowed for unlimited domains. Now, how do I go about maintaining multiple sites? I get that I'll have to point myfirstdomain.com and myseconddomain.com to the nameservers, but.....how do I make myfirstdomain.com point to the files that represent that site, and myseconddomain.com point to it's own files too?

Hope that makes sense....any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi,
You can add a domain in cPanel by going to:

cPanel -> Addon Domains

cool...now does that create a directory on the host where I put the files for that particular site? And if so, what do I do to make the domain representing that particular site point to just that folder/set of files?

It will make a folder in your public_html folder where you upload your files for the addon domain and when you type in addondomain.com in the browser it will display the files in the addondomains folder

Did you set the nameservers at your domain registrar to the ones supplied in the HG welcome email? It's usually a good idea to do that before you create your add-on domain in cPanel.

When you uploaded the files, did you put them in the add-on's folder?

Yes, I did repoint the domain names, but no, I didn't place the files in the add-on's folder. Do you need to create the folder?

Thanks Gwyneth, this is much appreciated.

Ah I see what you mean: I did create a file for the addon domain, yes. I was thinking you meant there should be a file called addons.

I checked and the domain is now activated on HG servers. I have created the files, but it's still not showing up. I think I took care of permissions too. What next?

Put the add-on domain files in the add-on domain folder. You give the same dns info for all of your domains. Then when the web browser goes to the IP address, it is directed to the proper files.

Thanks Wayne, yes I have public_html > 2nd doman > 2nd domain files. I just cannot see what is the problem. I checked and the domain is definitely propagated.

well the main URL is http://www.wellwrittenwords.com, and there's no problem with that. The addon is http://www.marketmou.com and therein lies the problem. Thanks guys.

Your files need to be relocated from the folder html to the root of the addon folder if that is your site:
http://www.wellwrittenwords.com/marketmou/html/

That is the default for cpanel to allow this. Add a redirect if you want to make sure this doesn't happen. That url would only be available to someone guessing though

Your welcome. Glad to see you have it working.

It takes a little while to get used to changes in hosts Cpanel is pretty nice when you get used to it.

It really should just show your addon domain in the address bar. It looks to me like you put something into the redirect section when you set up the addon. You don't need to add that since cpanel will set it up to use the addon folder as the docroot for that domain.

Whoa GvilleRick, their site works fine, they just noticed that they could also view it by foldername via the main domain as so many others have found ;D

Hi George,

It's not OK> I just submitted a ticket. The URL displaying like this will play havoc with pagerank and indexing. This site suffered in the recent Google shakeup, but no need to let it go completely, lol. I'll post and let you all know what support says.

It doesn't work correctly for me if I enter http://www.marketmou.com it is showing http://www.wellwrittenwords.com/marketmou/ instead. It should not do that if the addon was created properly. I realize that you can view the site using that address as well. I would check and make sure that there is nothing entered in the Redirect section on the Addon domain in your cpanel.

Thanks Rick. I checked, and there's no redirect. We're still working to see what the problem is. I'll let you all know.
