I currently host a couple sites with a SSL certificate installed. If I move these sites to my new reseller account, what will happen to the SSLs? Will I be able to move them too?
Thank you! |

Do you own the certificate?

Yes, the one I'm most concerned about, I just renewed. It is a QuickSSL from GeoTrust.
Thanks for the quick reply! |

Old thread, I know. But I just came across it... what does happen in this case, where you own a certificate, say one of the ones that you could buy from here, and the IP address of your site changes to say a dedicated server here or another hostgator server?

An SSL Certificate is issued to a domain name and not an IP address. The IP address doesn't matter as long as the domain name for which your SSL certificate has been issued does not change.

mm. I'm wondering then why there is a requirement for Resellers who buy an SSL certificate to have a dedicated IP? I'm thinking - perhaps because there can only be one SSL cert per IP? If so, how can it not be linked to IP addresses at all? It still confuses me.

The certificate is bound to a domainname, but the webserver links the certificate to the IP address. On a shared server each website using SSL must have a unique IP to ensure that the webserver knows which domain the SSL session should be for.
