Hey guys,
first off, I registered as it wouldn't let me post without registering.. So I just put in my current domain name even though it is not registered yet with hostgator (hope this won't cause any problems).. Basically my situation is this.. I have been with my current webhost for 3 years, however lately the service has been sliding a bit and last week there was an incident in which all my sql databases and cpanel settings were deleted/reset.. needless to say i realize now i should have made backups myself but regardless I am looking to move and after reading tons of reviews and looking at plans I am considering the hostgator Swamp plan. My first question is this.. I work as a web developer in an ASP environment and I like to test some of my work on my own server.. one of the things that really attracted me to the swamp plan is the inclusion of the Chilsoft ASP environment.. Am I right in thinking it should be able to serve up a regular asp page (not .net or anything) no problem? Its mostly just form validation code and other simple scripts.. Secondly, the only thing that didn't get deleted at my current host is the emails of various friends that I gave email accounts to.. I am ASSUMING that these emails can't be transfered over (they use cpanel as well), but if I am wrong it would make the transfer much easier ![]() That's about it.. I am planning to sign up later this week if all goes well ![]() thanks Very much! Chris |

I'm not sure about your ASP questions. Please look at http://www.sun.com/software/chilisoft/ for information on that issue.
I don't think email can be transfered.

Hi. Regarding backup/move of emails, I just setup a server here at HG and had no problems moving over 500 email accounts, some of which were way over 100 MB of storage from old host to new server here at HG.
OLD SYSTEM: Use cPanel. Go to Backup. Select "daily backup". It will download a *.tar file to your local computer complete with all web pages, images, data, web stats, email, everything EXCEPT mysql databases which can be backed up same way via Backup. NEW SYSTEM: Use cPanel. Go to Backup. Select "Upload a backup". Browse to the *.tar file on your local computer. Wait. Wait a bit more. Slow connection? Wait more.... ;-) When it is done it will display a big page of what it did (or did not) restore. Hope that helps a bit. |

With your old emails, if you still have your account on the old server, and the emails are there, and you have now moved your dns stuff to point at hg or whatever - as long as the mail stuff is on the old server you can get it for sure.
If you have cpanel you can backup the "daily site backup", this will include the emails. Sometimes I have even been able to simply go via ftp to old site, go below public_html, get into the mail folder and copy down the inbox files. Set up same system on new host via cpanel, then uploaded the inboxes via ftp, it worked just fine, I had to manually re-enter the username/pass stuff via setup mail account in cpanel, but AFTER that I just uploaded inbox files to the new ftp server and it worked. So, I guess, there be many ways to skin a cat. Are you at HG now? I think they are pretty good, been with others for years, only problem I have is that I miss sending fifty support requests every week. Here at HG I think I have sent 4 support requests in the last 3 months, something like that. Good Luck. |
