Default Moving to HG - Email \ Pop Questions

Hello all,

I've just signed up and am moving my hosting across from a different provider.

I'm following the guide so I've got the webspace set up, so that there's a fairly seamless 'web' transfer.

Got some questions on the email side though.

In order to use the email service provided by HG (so I can totally get rid of the old host) what should I be doing? Currently, my email address is set up on my domain on the old place, and I'll I've done is transfer the name servers to the new HG ones.

So, does this mean that all I need to do is create a new email address, like on my old domain (i.e. the mail address was name@domain.co.uk at the old host, and that's still working now, do I just create an email address exactly the same on HG?)

What about conflicts with the existing email address? Or am I confused?

Ta!

If your old host is a cpanel host you can do a full backup, upload to your HG account and ask HG to restore it.

Or you can set up your email addresses at HG manualy.

Give it a couple days after you change your nameservers to go back using either webmail or checking it by ip to retrieve any emails that ended up there during the switch.

Woah - fast - thank you!

The old host is not cpanel; it's a custom system over at 1and1.co.uk - so there's nothing I can transfer.

So, should I set up this new one in HG? And then just give it a couple of days, and when I'm no longer receiving mail in the 'old' account, swap the mailservers to HG's mailservers?

I'm tying my brain in knots...

Create your mail accounts within your HG account. When you have it and your website ready, change nameservers which will also start the process of changing the mail servers. To check email on both the old and the new you can use the mail server ips until the DNS propagates fully. Some use web mail, but I prefer to get all messages within my email client.

After about three days it is safe to cancel the old account after the DNS has propagated.

Thanks, that makes sense.

I've set mail up, and sent the name servers to the HG ones on my old provider's control panel. I'll give it a week, make sure everything's up and running and then drop 'em.

Just an update - thanks for the help.

Moved over and my emails are now working. Threw a support ticket regarding something else, got answered straight away.

Very impressed with the professional service so far - and even the professional amateur people on here *grins*
