Unhappy Moving from GoDaddy: Drupal, SMTP, and multiple domains questions

Hello There,

I currently have two domains and one "Deluxe 4GH" hosting plan with Godaddy.com

I have become very unhappy with how godaddy has their SMTP relay server setup. Both of the websites I run use Drupal 7 and I want users to validate their e-mail upon registration (much like I had to do to post in this forum). Godaddy has their email server set up to only send out emails every 40 minutes (but sometimes it takes HOURS). This is ridiculously long and has made many users not bother in completing their registration with my client's websites. I am not the only one unhappy about this, their forums have a lot of topics about this issue and GoDaddy has basically just said " buy a dedicated server then," which most of us can't afford.

My question is this: If I get "Baby Plan" hosting from HostGator, will I be able to make two websites with Drupal again and use both of my domains with one hosting plan? Also, if I swtich to Hostgator hosting will I be using a different SMTP server, and is Hostgator's SMTP server fast ? I hope so, 40+ mins to receive emails is awful.

I look forward to any responses, thank you

Hello,

I suggest that you view HostGator's mail policy which is located here:

http://www.hostgator.com/mailpolicy.shtml

As far as I know and have seen with my own use, there is no "send out emails every 40 minutes", they are set instantly. The main limitations that you must look out for is 500 emails per hour and double opt in mailing lists, as well as 5,000 max member mailing lists for Shared servers.

There are many users I have seen using HostGator with Drupal installations, though I would recommend that you enable or activate some sort of caching mechanism just to be safe if you are getting a Shared server. It will help to reduce resource consumption and provide you with a better Shared hosting experience.

Hello,

Thank you for your response and for directing me to that mail policy. I like what I have read so far.

I have another question though that may sound very noobish, but are custom emails/smtp stuff tied to hosting or domain accounts?

Hello,

If you move to HostGator then your site should switch to use the HostGator SMTP servers - If it doesn't then it can be sorted bery easily.

The outgoing limit of 500 per hour is per domain. So providing each of your sites have it's own domain (not subdomains - Actual domains) then each site would have it own's 500 hourly allowance. 500 emails is actualy quite a lot - With this kind of limit you could be sending 8 emails a limit and still be fine.

Yes - If you get the Baby plan you can host both the domains on the same account.

If you move to HG and need help then the support team is very friendly and willing - As well as us on the forums

Best of luck.

When you are on Hostgator, the email sent from your scripts will naturally go though its SMTP server. The email is sent almost immediately, there is no delay unless there is any rare technical issue. The limits are reasonable, you should not have any trouble. Welcome to HG
