I am now seriously interested in setting up a shared hosting account with HostGator as my current web hosts have too much downtime and you seem to offer all that I require (and much more besides) to move my site here.
Questions that I have before I make the final decision as to whether or not to move: - Can I simply set my www A record (and other records as appropriate) to HostGator's IP address, rather than change to hostgators nameservers, because I require full DNS control which the shared hosting won't (or doesn't appear to) offer. (I have this setup at my current web host, the A records point to my host when I have subdomains set up there, other subdomains point elsewhere using a combination of A and CNAME records to other hosts/servers as needed) - Can you please give me some information about confirming my identity r.e. account creation? For example, what circumstances would i be asked for paperwork or scanned documents, and what documents could I provide? - I run a very small website for a friend from a subdomain (he does not pay me, it is not as part of a business, and is a one-off thing), would I be allowed to run this from the shared plan, or would it count as "reselling" - How can I count the number of INODES i currently have without having to do it manually (my host only has a file count and not a folder count), and if I transfer my website and there are too many INODES, and my account is disabled, is it OK if I simply delete some to restore my account? - If there is ever a copyright violation on my account and it is disabled, would my account be re-activated if the violating files/works were deleted? Please if possible answer promptly. Thank you. |

Yes, you can just do the A record. I do this with a few sites.
Your country will determine what you need for confirmation, what country are you? If he doesn't pay you, you can do it...but he won't get his own cPanel.

- Thanks, I presumed as much, just wanted to make sure first.
- United Kingdom. - He doesn't need his own cPanel, as I will be running this for him. At most, he will be given FTP access to the subdomain and that's it. - Can someone answer my other questions? Thanks |

There is no innode-counter available through cPanel. Don't know the other answers. |

Anything that is government issued, ie. Drivers license, Passport, birth certificate etc.

Thanks, I presume a scanned birth certificate will do fine.
R.E. my friend and subdomain, I know all of the physical limitations of the hosting account, its the TOS I am worried about, as of whether hosting such a site would class as "reselling" (as I believe the terms and conditions state that reselling from a shared plan is forbidden) |

As long as you're not making money by hosting your friend, you're fine in the TOS.

Most likely. HostGator would probably take this situation on a case by case basis. Please read the Terms and Conditions carefully and verify all questions/answers with an official HostGator staff member.

And for an official answer to your questions, you may want to send them to sales [at] hostgator.com

I was wondering about the inodes aswell. I counted them by using CuteFTP and connecting to the main ftp. Going to the root directory, selecting everything and click properties. This counted all the folders and files (took about 5 mins though).

If you ticket support (or maybe even ask live chat) they can run a command to count it. It should take a few seconds and will give you the same number they would use.
