First, I don't want to move my DNS host (goDaddy), I want to keep complete control there.
![]() I am only interested in moving my vBulletin site (so www), I don't need email, ftp etc. Apparently, only the middle+ hosting plans can add the $2 static IP, correct? I already asked about concurrent connections but I have a few more.. ![]() What PHP version is running? What MySQL version is running? What is the PHP Max Post Size? I'm currently set to 8MB.What is the PHP Maximum Upload Size? I'm currently set to 5.00MB.What is the PHP Memory Limit? I'm currently set to 128MB.Can any of the above 3 be changed upon my request? Any PHP accelerators available? I'm current running eAccelerator 0.9.5.3.Thanks in advance ![]() |

What is the PHP Max Post Size? I'm currently set to 8MB. What is the PHP Maximum Upload Size? I'm currently set to 5.00MB. What is the PHP Memory Limit? I'm currently set to 128MB. No way of editing posts on this forum?

I also would like to make sure that I don't need to have hostgator host my domain names and I can keep it at goDaddy and simply update the host www to the static IP (Godaddy DNS control) I get assigned for my hostgator webhosting account.

For a definitive answer you should contact sales at hostgator dot com and ask there. These are peer support forums and the staff does not always get the chance to monitor.
You can leave your domain registration with GoDaddy and can use external DNS there (although it does mean some cPanel features such as automatic subdomain creation, etc will not work without making changes manually to your DNS zone.) All of the accounts will have a static IP. The $2 a month charge is for a dedicated IP and is not necessary for what you want to do. I'm not sure what the PHP settings are on the shared accounts but I would be real surprised if the Memory Limit is set to 128K or higher. You should ask support for those details. |

to get an official answer, I would suggest that you contact HG by livechat & / or by sending an email to sales at hostgator.com cause new servers might have different configuration than the old ones.

I guess I don't understand, what's the difference between a Static IP and a Dedicated IP address here at hostgator?
I just want the same IP address going forward for my site. I'll contact sales for more info on those other questions. |

I'm currently running my vBulletin site on XP (been flawless)..
Is it easy to setup a auto daily backup for the MySQL databases used for vBulletin? |

You can see PHP info on my site at http://virtech.org/home/phpinfo.php It should probably be typical of new HG servers as I've only been here for a little over a week myself. But contacting HG sales directly is still the best suggestion.
HG uses cPanel including it's MySQL managment features. So MySQL dB set-ups are very straightforward regardless of the web application that uses them. You only need to ensure that the application's MySQL username/password has the appropriate permissions on whatever database it is configured to use. Last edited by virtvir5; 03-09-2009 at 01:02 PM. |

Then you don't need the extra dedicated IP. You'll share the main IP with the rest of the users on the server, but it in general won't change.

you can leave your domain at godaddy without issue, however, which is what i think you're really wondering about. to change hosts, after you get your account moved over, you go into your domain record and change the nameservers to what HG gives you. that's what actually changes your hosting. then wait a couple of days and when you're convinced all is well, cancel your godaddy hosting account.

I understand that the IP will change on Host change, I also understand that some Hosts require you to let them your DNS since the IP can change of the web server you are running (for whatever reasons). I also understand virtual domains on Apache.
What I am hoping is that I will get one IP address from Hostgator (if I choose them) that will not change (unless they give me proper notice, days in advance). I prefer a dedicated IP address, an IP address not shared with others though I understand my website will be on a shared server. These servers can have multiple IP addresses, does Hostgator do this or offer this? Speedhost has an option for this. |

I guess when they say Static IP, that is the main IP for the shared Server. All sites share that IP address and apache uses virtual domains.
Is there an option for one dedicated IP address for my site on the shared server.. Hopefully, my question is more clear this time..

Yup at $2.00 monthly. See http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml for comparative info on all shared offerings.

The shared IP you get *will not change*. It will be as static as any dedicated, non-shared IP.

Ok, great... thanks for the info..
![]() Why wouldn't people want a non-shared IP (Dedicated IP) even on a shared host?

Because individual dedicated IP addresses are seldom needed for each one of the multiple domains hosted on a shared server. A single static IP address is usually sufficient for all. The DNS system takes care of all the subordinate assignments.
It's doubtful that many users of most domain access are even aware of the asssociated IP addresses of the sites they frequent. And one can always use xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/~username (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the shared address) should it be necessary for some reason. |

There are a limited number of IP addresses available and it is really not necessary to have a dedicated IP to just to run a website. The company I worked for previously had a policy to only allow dedicated IP addresses if it was needed, such as having an SSL certificate installed.

Yes, several hosts don't offer it, others do and that is why I am considering Hostgator...
