Default Moodle in VPS

Hi, we want to host our Moodle site and I have some questions:

1. Can I install moodle in a VPS host ? Is the installation automatic like in web hosting ?
2. What is the max upload size ?
3. VPS hosting has ftp access ?

Thanks in advance.

I believe the answers are generally yes, but to get an official answer, write to sales (at) hostgator.com.

VPS is similar to a dedicated server. Obviously you will have complete control over it and will be able to host any kind of site, unless it directly breaks a TOS. I dont know specifically about moodle, but as a web application, you should not have any problem.

Max upload size is what you want to set, remember - it is your own server. You can edit php.ini, .htaccess or whatever you want to make the changes.

FTP, obviously. It is your server!

Hi juliancadavid,

I actually run 3 moodle installations for the local school disctrict in my city on a Level 3 VPS from HostGator. Note that this is not an incredible amount of traffic, as there is a little over 100 users, but at times there can be 15+ concurrent users submitting quizzes, viewing lessons, etc.. I have never heard a complaint from the school district about anything, and they are always happy with the speed and performance of the server. I mainly have it on a VPS because I needed to install some custom software, mainly latex for Moodle, which can generate math formula's as images.

This handy matrix clarifies what apps aren't included in "any kind of site":

Hi, in this moment, I dont need any custom software. I would like to know what are the advantages of VPS against the reseller hosting. Thanks in advance.
