Default Mono (Asp.net) compatibility for linux

There is now available an port of asp.net that runs on linux under apache using an apache module mod_mono that can allow many asp.net web apps to run on linux.

Mono 2.0 has just been released, making C# 3.0 and even LINQ available on linux & apache.

I am considering HG to transfer my hosting to, but since I have years of .NET experience and my PHP-days are long gone I'm still hesitant to switch from Windows 2003 hosting to Linux.

If I could have the mod_mono apache module for mono 2.0 installed I would hesitate nog longer . Is this possible or should that be investigated by HG staff?

Thanks, Jeroen

I am at a total loss as to why anyone would want or need to run .NET/Mono on a 'nix box.

It's simple really...

I've invested the last 8 years in .NET. Learning the languages, the architecture, the class libraries, etc. Building my experience by developing, architecting & analysing, using the Microsoft platform, as part of my job. Privately I did build some sites using PHP (just because that was the available hosting) for myself and to help people out, but I quickly decided that keeping my knowledge & experience up on both platforms was not very efficient. Obviously, I chose .NET... .

But now, it looks like I can have it both ways . Use a good Linux hosting package (which are still better compared to most of the same priced Windows packages) AND use my .NET experience. Being able to use .NET would save me a huge amounts of time, not having to find out how everything works in PHP (or any other language) while I know how to do it with .NET.

All I need is a host that is willing.....

Stick with a windows server. It's like using a flat blade screwdriver in a phillips head screw. It'll work, but boy it's just easier to use the correct tool i the first place.

Sorry for resuscitating this post, but I'd like to know if there are any plans to install mod_mono module on your Linux servers?

My situation is exactly the same as the guy who initiated this thread: Codeblack. I have a strong ASP.NET programming background and all my applications connect to MySQL only (so I don't need MSSQL). What I need is a great hosting company that supports Mono. I've been waiting for Hostgator to launch their Windows Shared servers since 2007 and still nothing. I really like HG and don't want to host my sites somewhere else. The ideal solution would be a Linux server capable of running ASP.NET applications, and thanks to Mono this can be achieved. If you just installed this mono module the need for IIS and Windows servers would suddenly dissapear. Mono is already in version 2.6 and the compatibility list is wonderful, .NET 3.5 is already supported, check it out here: http://mono-project.com/Compatibility

Yes I know some of you will say it's not the right way to do it, but I beg to disagree. Mono is a software platform designed for Linux, an implementation of the .NET framework (a successful one indeed). There are actually a long list of companies using Mono right now, you can take a look at the list here: http://www.mono-project.com/Companies_Using_Mono
Did you know that Wikipedia uses Mono for its search facilities? The indexing and the actual searching is done by Mono-based applications.

I installed Mono on my local little Linux server, and my ASP.NET applications worked great, no sluggishness or anything like that.

Please consider it. Thanks.

If you have a VPS or dedi, you can install it yourself.

I think such mods are experimental and not of production quality. If you really want something in asp.net, why not get a windows server?

As I said before, I've been waiting for HG to launch Windows Shared servers since 2007. Can't afford a dedicated one. If HG could only see that all future Windows customers would instantly become Linux customers the moment they implement Mono (which is not experimental anymore by the way).

I too need a solution to host a legacy asp.net site for one of my clients and do want to invest in a dedicated server for this one limited site. I hate to look elsewhere and had hoped HG would have a workable solution. I will have to take my client elsewhere for this hosting opportunity. :-(

How about a VPS? You could easily put mod_mono on a VPS, they are quite a bit cheaper then a dedicated server.

Yeah they're cheaper than a Dedicated one, but we're looking for Shared Hosting.
