Default Monitoring tools does impact stats program (webstat, awstat) ?

Hello everybody,
How are you ?

Does a tool monitoring like "host-tracker" have an impact on statistical program like webstat or awstat ? I mean, if host-tracker check my site 4 times / hours, does it count as 4 visitors/ hours on awtsats and webstats ?

Thank you very much
Have a nice day !

Best Regards,
Hadoken

It would depend on how they were checking. Mostly, they just open port 80 and look to see if something responds. Those will not show up because they are not served a page. Cheaper, less cool sites might ask for a page, if they do that, then they are going to register, but you'll see them in Web stats as a user who goes to your site a lot.

I will do a reaserch on this question.

It is interseting but it should be like the ping command in windows, just send and receive packets and not requesting any files on the remote server. So it should not alter your stats programs.

Best regards,
Chaloupe

Thank you both for the answers.
The problem is host-tracker and most of monitoring site don't explain how they do their checking.
Well, it's not bad idea Serra, I'll give a try for a couple of days, and we'll see if there a super visitor (from host-tracker, it's look like they have a farm of server throught the world that check if your site is online...)

Thank you very much.
Have a nice day !

Hadoken

If you ping a server (and get a reply) it only tells that the server is up, but it doesn't tell, for example, is the http server up.

Also ping may fail because some servers are blocking ping requests.

If you want to check if the web server is running you can connect to port 80 in that server and see if it's answering. As Serra stated that does not show up in stats.

Hello,
I am back for the report .

So I started the test with host-tracker since the last time, here is the result :

Awstats :
On Hosts (Top 25) , I have some ip that made hits with 0 bandwiths... I suppose they all come from host-tracker.

Ip : 69.57.130.*** : Pages : 363. Hits : 363. Bandwith : 0.
Ip : 193.222.108.** : Pages : 68. Hits : 68. Bandwith : 0.
Ip : 67.19.112.*** : Pages : 66. Hits : 66. Bandwith : 0.
Ip : 81.177.3.*** : Pages : 17. Hits : 17. Bandwith : 0.
Ip : 81.169.175.*** : Pages : 16. Hits : 16. Bandwith : 0.
Ip : 63.247.69.*** : Pages : 13. Hits : 13. Bandwith : 0.

These one are listed as unique visitors.
On "Connect to site from" part at "Links from an external page (other web sites except search engines)" I have this :
http://host-tracker.com/site-uptime-stats/.... : 542 (pages) 542 (hits)

Well it's look like the total of IP's who made a 0 bandwith

Webalizer :

On "Total Referrers" part, I have this :
http://host-tracker.com/site-uptime-stats/.... : 542 (hits)

Well well, this test answered my first question, host-tracker have an impact on statistic program.
Is there some tools monitoring who doesn't have this impact ? I mean that would be great if they are not listed as unique visitor...

Thank you very much and have a great day !
