From what I understand about this - it's an excellent decision.

I take it I'll now be able to run scripts that used to send chills down my spine because they required 777 permissions?

Thanks,

Andy

In my experience, anything that's ever said it *needed* 777 has been fine with 755. Have you experienced different, first-hand?

How about software that requires 777 and checks that chmod before it will install? All of my customers are using CubeCart which does require files to be 777 before installation and wont install without it. I realise that CubeCart can be installed via Fantastico but it is well known that Fantastico messes up the config file by missing things out.

Can you list the dates as to when each server upgrade will be taking place? I'd like to know well in advance so if my site does experience problems atleast I will know why. Thanks.

Maybe someone knows if/how wordpress and webcalendar manual installs might be effected? I am not using any special scripts or anything, just regular posts and links to images (no uploading)...

Can I suggest that we limit posts to this thread to just the update schedules and not any support issues? I don't visit the forums often and I would prefer to subscribe so I am notified of any changes and not all the different support issues?

No not all, the reseller server I am on is not setup yet.

I think the prior efforts were basically a pilot.

Any idea if/when PHP 5 might be available in the reseller servers? I'd like to be able to toggle between 4 and 5 for various sites I host with Hostgator. Seems like this upgrade would be an opportune time for some other installs as well.

You can change it from within 'Extra Features' > 'Auto .htaccess' from within CPanel (or at least that's how it is on shared). Remember to back up your .htaccess.

But if it's on shared, one would think its also on reseller?

H.

One issue that I see is getting files and directories chowned and chmoded to the correct values, I assume hg will be doing this on our sites as they are transitioned

Hey, just want to say thanks for such a well communicated change! I've been at other hosts where they've made far more serious changes with catastrophic consequences without any notice to their customers. Makes me glad I moved...

Nope, i think resellers would complain if it was called HostGator Extras, and had hostgator all over it

I have a reseller account and most of my clients are using Joomla in different versions for their websites and serveral plug-in like virtuemart and SEO pluging. If you make this change and it brings down these site it will be devistating to me and my clients. What provistions and testing have been done with all the scripts you plan on running and have you tested all the available apps under the Cpanel?

I used to use iPowerWeb until they did something like this and it killled a few of my sites. Before you make these changes how about do some testing and make some white papers for us on things we need to do now and thing we need to do moving forward.

I really wish more notice had been given, we're still dealing with issues from the last round of upgrades, so we'd rather prefer to have more time to relocate out of potential harms way to another provider.

Last time everyone on the server had the same kinds of problems, so as far as support was concerned, it was pick a number and we can't do anything until the upgrade issues have been resolved at a timeframe we'd rather not speculate on.

So they might have us in a compromise to afford to spin that one, but our own client's won't wear the inconvience, or put up with that kind of nonsense - the hosting market's simply too competitive, plus, it detriments sites to be offline for 'whenever issues get fixed' and the mere suggestion of 500 internal server errors for 3 known reasons, is just the tip of the iceberg ... what about the ones that can't be anticipated, like last time

Post Re: Mod_php to PHPSuEXEC migration.

I read that phpSuExec doesn't use .htaccess files but a .ini file. How do we convert specific content in the .htaccess file so it can be used in the .ini file?

I hope my joomla sites and my vbulletin forums will not be affected by this

Most of our servers are running PHPSuEXEC. Only the older servers still have mod_php on them.

I should also include that those who are wondering how their sites will work with PHPSuEXEC, you can always try out the same basic environment by using our PHP5 installation, which is a CGI Redirect. To use PHP5, simply add "AddType application/x-httpd-php5 .php" to your .htaccess file.

So having tested and noticing errors beyond our experience to handle what can we do to get issues resolved before the server changes take effect?

Hello,
Most of the errors are relatively simple to fix. If you are on a Shared server, you can try running the "Internal Server Error" check on HG Extras. Internal Server Errors are usually from Insecure permissions, invalid htaccess file settings/syntax, or too many processes running.

I would be glad to take a look at your account, you may create a ticket with the subject "ATTN DaveC".
