Mixed review so far
It's been nearly three weeks since I signed up for HostGator, moving my hosting away from a bad experience with iPower. I chose iPower due to the positive reviews at apparently reliable sites like HostJury.com and WebHostingTalk.com. (Its front end and Knowledgebase didn't seem as user-friendly as LunarPages or DreamHost, but it looked more reliable in terms of uptime and support.)
The initial setup was easy, but unfortunately I've had to deal with support a fair bit along the way since then, with mixed results.
In particular, I got inconsistent information about what I had to do to initiate a domain registration transfer, and then a fair amount of "wait and see" when it didn't go right (thanks to the previous registrar).
I also had to go through a lot of back-and-forth to clarify some apparently inconsistent information in the Knowledgebase about having an Addon domain point to the same content as a subdomain.
Particularly unfortunate was the switch to the new ticket system this past weekend -- which automatically changed my password without advance notice, preventing me from logging in, but then failed to send me the new password as it was supposed to, forcing me to phone Support to get it in person. The new system also appears to have lost all my old tickets (including the open one, about the in-process domain transfer).
For all that, though, the support has still been far faster and friendlier than what I had to put up with before! (Which may say more about my previous host, or about industry standards in general, than about HG... I don't know.)
