I've tried to install two apps using Fantastico on two separate occasions; on both instances the installations have fallen over. I get unhelpful errors telling me a parameter or variable hasn't been entered in the required format, even though it has.
It's not very usable in my opinion; given this is supposed to make installing and configuring these apps easier. At the end of the day, I'm going to have to install these manually, just has I had to with SMF. Clearly an example of an app that underwent no usability testing, and was designed by a load of developers

I've had no problems with fantastico either. I can do with or without it. My previous host did not even have it so I have no problems loading files if I need to.

Same here, don't really use it.
Only install a script using Fantastico to make a test or check something. I like to be in control during the installation and besides that Fantastico is not always updated with the latest scripts. Once you have installed one or two scripts manually it becomes easier. |

The only problems with fantastico is there's no ability to add scripts... and the other is that some of the lesser used scripts don't get updated frequently.
Aside from that... why would you install wordpress for instance manually instead of via fantastico? |

Care to elaborate? I've NEVER had a problem with any wordpress installation on fantastico so I wouldn't know.

There are a lot of reasons why if you search the internet and especially on this forum. It mostly has to do with fantastico installations being older, and having security problems.

Even though it has some faults Fantastico overall is a great idea with a good implementation. The issues we see with it are easily fixable and more often than not it's misconfiguration on the user's end and not Fantastico's fault.
Overall I like Fantastico alot and I actually use it (I very much prefer a 3 click installation over grabbing tarballs and installing manually). But then again my opinion may be biased a bit since I spend 8 hours out of my day installing your scripts! (autopilot anyone!?)
