We are forced to run a file system check on the mazda server. Once the check is completed all services should be back online. We will keep this updated on the progress.

Isn't is possible to run these kinds of checks as a background process? Or will this always bring down all services?

In order to do a file system check the partition has to be unmounted. This causes us to bring down services that access the /home partition. Since /home was set to read-only we were forced to do this check at this time. |

How was the partition set to read only? What can we do to prevent this from appening again?

When a file system becomes corrupt the system automatically sets it to read-only to prevent further corruption. At this point nothing can write to it so we have to do the check to correct the issue. During the check we find specific users who have corrupted files and the problem usually is caused by the users with file corruption. We are contacting those users at this time

Not exactly sure what is a corrupted file. How do they get that way? Is there anything my clients and I can do to prevent our files from getting corrupted?

Normally we see corrupted file systems from users with a large number of files or that use scripts that write to a large number of files quickly. This is not a normal occurrance so I can't really give you specific precautions to take. Since this is a shared environment there is always a chance for another user to do something like this and cause problems. If we ever see problems with resold accounts, the reseller is the first one to be contacted with further details.
If you would like more details on linux file systems, I would recommend googling that term. There are a ton of articles online with details. |
