Default MAPS/mail-abuse.com blacklistings

On Monday of this week, we received a single notification from mail-abuse.com (run by Trend Micro) that we had a large number of IP blocks suddenly blacklisted due to a failure to communicate from our datacenter.

Myself and key members of the Abuse Department are working on getting these removed as quickly as possible. So far, it's a slow process and mail-abuse.com is lacking in their producing of evidence but are quick to keep us blocked.

If you receive a bounce back stating you're blocked due to a specific blacklist, MAPS-DUL, immediately email the provider who blocked you and tell them they need to use more reliable lists. The DUL list is a dynamic list that not only blocks entire ranges of IPs but also frequently blocks ISPs such as Comcast and Time-Warner. The DUL list is not to be used due to its severe lack of granularity.

I've just gotten off the phone with Trend Micro San Diego who controls MAPS/mail-abuse.com and forwarded them our list of IPs that have been affected by this listing. We will begin working on removal from the list as soon as I have possession of the evidence that caused the listings.

We no longer need you to email us any headers from bounced emails as we have our entire list of IPs compiled.

74.53.108.130 is the first IP in our list to be removed from MAPS. This is gator236.

Yesterday I emailed our list of IPs to MAPS however, I've received no contact back so far and since one IP was already removed, I cannot discern what methodology or approach to this they are taking.

67.18.54.118 (gator5) has been delisted now. I also had to re-send our list again to MAPS.

I've been in contact with the MAPS people and they say that HostGator is confused, dont know what you are talking about, and there is a continued Phishing scam coming from boss.websitewelcome.com. I'm starting to get a little mad considering for some reason every local company here uses that useless ass list.

You think you could bump 69.93.241.82 to the top of your list? Pretty please?

Your comment is not only ridiculous, but also very stupid.

We've been in contact with MAPS on a daily basis to get these removed. From what I understand, it has not been easy to work with them, but we are still making progress.

Attacking me on the forums is not only rediculous but very stupid. You don't know the situation so stay out cheif. I actually got some of the IP's removed from quite a few lists myself. Working on it on my own and making a lot of progress. I then e-mailed abuse and asked if the person doing the spamming has been taken care of so that I'm not wasting my time. They said yes, it has. So go away and stay out of things over your head. I admit I was angry last night, I lost a huge client over it. Calling me stupid was out of line, you know nothing about me or what I know. I have always been curtious and respectful to hostgator staff. Always finished a ticket with a thank you and a compliment. Always started the ticket with respect. You know nothing about me, DO NOT attack me again.

I don't need to know anything about you, but I know what I read.
If you act like an idiot does not necessarily mean that you are one, but it means that you look like one.

Then take your own advice and look at how you look right now. You aren't involved in this so run along.

I really doubt this situation is over QuietFinn's head. If this client was so huge, you should be on a dedicated controlling your own IP, or at least a semidedicated with a much lower chance of getting blacklisted (do I sound like Serra yet?)

He knows enough about you to read your comment about them making it worse and knowing it made no sense.

And come on, threatening him?

I just left a company where I built the data center. I was system administrator of the entire network. Got offered a job as the IT Manager for a multimillion dollar Eye Surgeon. So excuse me if I'm smart enough to start a small hosting company on the side without bringing the company into debt to start off with. I'm doing this as a side job in the evenings. I refused to use my own personal money to do the company. I'm going to build up to a dedicated eventually, but not as of right now because it's not smart business. So I lost a 2500 deal and it pissed me off, doesn't bother me as of right now because I will get another. You come on here acting like you know it all. I should have gotten a dedicated, right, ok.

Well I think you said it all with that! If it was a $2500 deal than there is absolutly no excuse for not going dedicated.

My point is that on shared hosting, you will always have a problem with blacklisting. There's no question and no doubt about it. If your client has such a huge problem with blacklisting that they'll leave you for it, you and them need to understand that the only way to increase your chances of not being on a blacklist is to pay for a setup that has less people.

So, they can pay enough for you to afford a semi-dedicated, or even more and let you afford a dedicated, and their blacklist problems will be reduced greatly. If they want to pay $10/month or whatever it is, Blacklisting will be a part of life. Same goes for you-- there's no problem with you paying $35/month or whatever for reseller hosting, but you can't come on here acting holier-than-though about the blacklisting. It's $35/month shared hosting. It WILL happen, and it's in HG's interest to clear it ASAP-- not to hear you complain about how they caused more problems.

We've managed to secure enough evidence for all IPs blocked over the weekend. I will be splitting this up and handing it out to the Abuse Department so that we can have more than two people working on this to get it resolved ASAP.

Oh and boss should be removed from SBL soon. The spammer was removed last night sometime but no one notified Spamhaus to get the IP removed.

Yeah I talked to one of the tech guys for a while last night. I commend you guys on the quick work.

As for the rest of you, I'm going to be the adult here and quit arguing. You guys don't understand the situation and just want to make yourselves look good. I know good and well that this happens for a while, I was the sys admin for a large data center for many years. Have been doing web hosting for 10 years, so don't try to school me. I'm done arguing with all of you.

You mean it wouldn't be ok to take $2500 from a client and turn around and put them on a shared hosting plan? Oooppss..
